Morro Bay is a town in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 1,728 at the 2010 census. Morro Bay is located on the mouth of the Morro Bay River. It is northeast of San Francisco and southwest of Half Moon Bay. The first Europeans to encounter the bay were Spanish Alvarado and Ponce de Leon in 1519 and 1521 respectively. In 1775, Lieutenant Governor Gaspar Fortunato Menéndez de Avilés named it El Bárbaro because of its "wild and savage" people who lived thereabouts. In 1834, Captain John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort at what is now Morro Bay after landing his Sacramento Party from Monterey on July 29, 1833, near present-day Sausalito. The fort was used as a staging ground for exploration up the coast until it was abandoned in 1836 due to environmental problems caused by sea level changes during the Gold Rush period. On January 12, 1850, President James K. Polk signed Executive Order 9784 ordering all federal land east of Sacramento be sold to prevent Mexican Incursion into California; this included most of present-day Marin County including Morro Bay. On May 10th 1860 US Army General Edmund Kirby Smith destroyed part of Sutter's Fort which allowed access to mudflats that later became Live Oak Harbor but very few buildings were ever built on these flats since they were considered unpromising site for settlement because they lacked any water or soil Resources suitable for farming purposes...Many businesses still exist within walking distance today such as IGA groceries (anchored next door), Safeway (just across busy Hwy 101) & Chevron gas station with pumps outside both doors - despite having been vacant for years! Morro Bay is a small town in eastern San Mateo County, California, United States. It is located on the Morro Bay Naval Base and has a population of about 1,500. The name comes from Spanish for "Moorish bay" and refers to the wide mouth of the bay which forms its namesake. The town was founded in 1878 by Captain George W. Brown as Fort Brown on land awarded him by Governor Fillmore for his part in suppressing Native American uprising at Saratoga Springs. The fort was renamed Morro Bay in honor of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna who had fought against Mexican forces at the battle of Palo Alto on November 26, 1847. After Mexico ceded California to America in 1848, Santa Anna's remains were brought back to Morro Bay and interred there with other Mexican war dead including José Joaquin Murillo y Herrera (who later became governor of California), Juan Bautista Laguna and Ignacio Zaragoza. In 1886, following claims that oil had been discovered near Morro Bay, developer John Dicken bought land adjacent to the naval base and began developing it into an oil refinery and manufacturing center known as Dicken Oil Company; this company remains active today. In 1916 Aldrich Rockefeller purchased rights to drill for natural gas under what is now Rockefeller Center; he designated Morro Bay as the site of his new drilling operation.
