In 1855, Marines were first sent to the California Coast Guard for coastal defense. They soon became a part of the Regular Army and in 1868 assumed their present role as marines. The marine Corps was created on December 10th, 1941 with the passage of Executive Order 9983 which authorized United States Naval Forces in Europe (USNFE) to provide military protection for Great Britain and her allies during World War II. The Marine Corps grew rapidly from its original 1,500 Marines to over 30,000 by 1945. During World War II, more than 2,500 marines have lost their lives in combat including Master Sergeant William “Willie” Pyle who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at Iwo Jima. Gift history begins with Captain John Sutter’s donation of an armory and barracks at Morro Bay in 1897. This began the Marine Barracks program which continues to this day. In 1916, Commodore George Dewey donated two small ships USS Olympia (LPD-5) and USS Mare Island (LPD-7), both converted into amphibious assault boats known as PT boats. These boats played an important role in Operation Neptune’s Spear when they assisted with landings on Kwajalein Atoll on February 23rd 1942 under Lieutenant Commander James Wickersham Jr.. Morro Bay is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 5,194 at the 2010 census. Morro Bay is named after the Morro Rock lighthouse, which is located on the bay. Prior to Ulysses S Grant giving General Order No 4789 dated Dec 6th 1865 commanding all Union troops engaged east of Sacramento River forbidding any black people from entering or residing within one thousand mile radius thereof jurisdiction any white person owning land within said radius was ordered executed without trial by sheriff having no power so to do except in cases involving insurrectionists or rebels against United States Government; General Order No 4789 remains an ordinance still Executing today bulletins issued annually thru US Marshals Service Southwest Enforcement Command warning citizens living within such a radius of Sacramento River southeast side city limits not to cross into Mexican territory not exceeding five miles wide nor go beyond bounds prescribed therein without prior notice/warning
The Morro Bay area was first settled by the Inupiat people in the late 1800s. They were a Northwestern Alaskan Native tribe and used morro bay for hunting, fishing, and their traditional way of life. The first European settlers arrived in 1821, and they started trading with the Inupiat people. By 1836, there were 10 European families living in the Morro Bay area. The first school was built in Morro Bay in 1838. The town of Morro Bay grew up around these early settlers and their businesses. By 1850, there were 30 houses inMorro Bay and 100 people living there. This growth may have been due to the fact that it was an isolated location with few trade routes available to other parts of California. In 1851, a post office was established at Morro Bay. This post office served as a junction for many different mail routes being traveled throughout California. It also became an important stop for travelers heading into or out of San Francisco Bay Area. In 1862, railroad construction began in California andMorRObay became one of the first embarkation points for trains traveling between Sacramento and San Francisco. During World War II, MorRObay played an important role as a military base during the war effort because it had access to many naval vessels which were used for defense against Japanese submarines and air attacks. After World War II ended,morRObay reverted back to its original status as a small beach town until the early 1990s when large sections of it were developed into new neighborhoods known as "The Beach".
