The U.S. Army arrived in 1922 and the Marine Barracks were converted into an Army hospital in 1941. In 1951, the Navy Memorial building opened and is still used today as a barracks for recruits and their families. The Morro Bay community has grown increasingly supportive of the military through various means over the years, from providing goods and services to donations of equipment, supplies, or money. From 1973 to 1998, when all enlistments ended for local residents serving in active duty or reserve units,Morro Bay contributed an average of $5 per day to support military members deployed overseas. In recent years, Operation Homecoming has brought large numbers of troops home on shortnotice, so donations have also increased significantly (estimated at $30 per day this year). Today’s militaries are no longer just located elsewhere; Morro Bay is home to three army installations with more than 25 tents and thousands of pounds of equipment spread out across five acres within the town center mall complex! These deployments reflect not only our growing love for our service members but also our appreciation for their sacrifices – whether it be during World War II when we donated tanks and artillery pieces to Japan; or Desert Storm when we provided food and water to coalition forces occupying Iraq. Through all these events and more, we know that together we can support any cause!

Morro Bay is a small town located in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. The name Morro Bay comes from the Mexican words for "cataract" and "bay". It was founded by Spanish settlers in 1821 as part of Rancho Temescal, which extended along the coast from San Bernardino toPalmdale. In 1849, following Mexico's declaration of independence from Spain, Morro Bay became part of California. The first permanent English-speaking residents were Mormons who had come overland in handcarts from Salt Lake City in handcart companies known as the Great Mormon Migration. They began ranching around Morro Bay in 1851 and built a few homes there before moving back to Utah. A few years later, however, they started building a larger ranch at what is now Del Norte County Park northeast of town. The Mormons used their new land to build their own mills and churches that remain today a popular tourist attraction. The post office opened in 1861, and soon enough people were coming to live hereabouts because there was no other place to go until you got out into the desert country beyond Diablo Range on either side of Coyote Creek where sheep and cattle could be raised. By 1870 there were 150 inhabitants living hereabouts; by 1910 it had grown to 2200 with a school, store and several smaller residences scattered around the bayou area near present-day Crescent City (southwest of town). When World War I broke out in 1914, many soldiers arrived at Morro Bay on troop ships called "Hercules." Many Marines who landed ashore never left alive due to disease or enemy fire; only about fifty men made it back home after spending weeks or months swimming upstream towards safety across Coyote Creek rapids--the longest swimmer being John Dory who crossed on July 25th 1916 after days of hard swimming against strong current--and reaching Landing Beach south of town late one evening without mishap (Dory’s exploit has been often cited as an early example of water travel by sea). In 1922 Sheriff Harry Waddell decided that since both sides were fighting close by he would put up posters throughout town asking anyone interested in law enforcement work whether they wanted an officer or not; within two weeks 4000 applications had been received and Waddell hired 350 men for his department which included all sorts of tasks including patrols during prohibition raids on bootlegging operations going on nearby Yucca Valley wineyards just west of town; traffic stops during prohibition raids went back then also without incident although some drivers did get pulled over for having “too much gas” During WWII when Morro Bay was attacked by Japanese forces most people fled into hiding but about 30 stayed behind mainly women children gleaners working downriver helping with food supplies necessary for resistance fighters . Most everyone else moved away during this time because war produced more problems than benefits . After WW II ended things returned to normal except for construction projects such as modernization/renovationof schools etc which continued until about 1951 when statehood happened making Morrison bay an unincorporated community once again
In 1848, the area now known as Morro Bay was part of Rancho San Francisco. In 1852, the area became part of Bear Valley National Monument. In 1906, the Morro Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve was established.
