The history of the navy in Morro Bay, California dates back to 1851 when the first ship arrived in the town, named for Spanish sailor and explorer Juan Vizcaino. The town name was changed to San Francisco de los Montes in 1856, after Mexico won its independence from Spain. In 1863, San Francisco was incorporated as a city and soon became home to one of the most powerful navies on the West Coast. The fleet at this time consisted of three ships-the USS Constitution (1858), USS Brooklyn (1859), and USS Sacramento (1860). The navy's first aircraft carrier, USS Yorktown (CV-9), was built here in 1941. In 1966, Morro Bay became part of Superstorm Sandy's path across California. As waves pounded into shorelines along the coast, homes were destroyed and much of what is now downtown Morro Bay was lost. Aftermath included a new naval base being built at Carlsbad Naval Air Station which continued operations until 1993. This old air station served as a vital hub for Navy jets flying missions over Northern California during storm events such as Hurricane Katrina or Earthquake. Today, there are two active Navy installation: Naval Weapons Station Point Loma and Naval Air Station El Centurion. both located about an hour away from Morro Bay by car or Amtrak train; these installations support surface warfare activities throughout North America while also providing access to carriers like USNS Abraham Lincoln(CVN 74) that can participate in multinational exercises off Eastern coasts around the world

Morro Bay is a small coastal town in Sonoma County, California. The town has a population of about 1,000 people and sits on the north shore of Morro Bay. It is located east of San Francisco on Route 1A. The first Europeans to visit Morro Bay were the Spanish in 1769, when they stopered off the coast of present-day Morro Bay. The bay was named for Antonio de Morro, an admiral who commanded Spain's Armada in 1598-1600. In 1824, James Humes built a wharf on the north side of the bay for shipping goods from Monterey to Stockton. By 1828, there were two stores and nine houses in the town. In 1850, Robert Marshall opened a store at what is now Market Street in Morro Bay and started to sell produce from his farmstead near the bay. By 1861, there were four stores and twelve houses in town with a population of about 150 people. The following year saw another winery being established by Augustus Earle Wulfenbach: Wulfenbach Vineyards Incorporated (later known as Napa Valley Wine). Wulfenbach became one of California's leading winegrowers and produced some of Napa Valley's most famous wines such as Claret and Chardonnay. During World War II it was home to many Naval Air Station Groves personnel who constructed hangars at various locations around town; these Hangar Park buildings still remain standing today within walking distance of most residents In 1978–79 local resident Don Freeman organized "TheSaveMorroBay Committee" which petitioned then-Governor Jerry Brown to protect Morro Bay from development by proposing that all public land be vested with control over development only until certain goals had been achieved including protecting resources like sea shells found nearby while also ensuring firefighter safety while firefighting operations take place; this proposal failed but generated interest among locals so Don continues working towards finalizing plans for protection . Morro Bay is a small town in San Luis Obispo County, California. It was founded on December 4, 1853 by Captain John T. Morrill and his party of United States Marines. The name is Spanish for "Moor's Bay." The first post office at Morro Bay was established on July 26, 1854. The first store in the town was founded by J.C. Lovell and Wm. Hargrave on October 1, 1856. It took until 1861 for the first school to be built in Morro Bay. In 1865, the Morrill Post Office moved from its original location to what is now Main Street and it remained there until 1959 when it moved back to its original location on First Street (now part of State Route 178). In 1868, James Fenton constructed a cabin called "Windy Hill" which he lived in until his death in 1903; it still stands today outside of town limits as a museum piece. The following year saw the opening of the first electric power plant in California, located just east of Morro Bay near Paso Robles; this plant became operationalamidst much criticism from local residents who saw it as an intrusion into their privacy and rural lifestyle
