As coffee beans grow in size, they also tend to increase in price. This is especially true for small batch coffee, which can be expensive to produce and consume on a regular basis. In order to keep small batch coffee affordable, some of the earliest adopters of this type of coffee were those who lived in Morro Bay. In 1885, Charles Shultz opened the first smallbatch coffee house in Morro Bay. It was located onshore at what is now known as Second Street and First Avenue. Over time, other local businesses began opening their own small-batch cafes and restaurants. These establishments would sell their own processed coffees and pastries from their own roasting plants. One of the most important pioneers of small batch coffee was Mr. John Malone Jr., who founded Malone’s Coffee Company in 1946 in Morro Bay. Morro Bay is a small town in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Morro Bay–ISP Beach–Agua Caliente Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent residents of what would become Morro Bay were two brothers who landed on Isla de la Botega on December 24, 1835, during the Mexican-American War. They named their island Isla de las Animas after one of their female kin who had died in childbirth there a year earlier. A few weeks later they sold what became known as Rancho San Francisco to James Waddell and his son John Waddell for $5 per acre. In 1839 James Waddell subdivided Rancho San Francisco into six parcels and sold them to various farmers throughout Northern California for $10 an acre each. In 1844 George Jones bought some of these tracts and built the first brick building in Morro Bay – the post office was dedicated on November 10, 1845. The town began to grow rapidly due to irrigation systems developed by pioneer John Muir and others in the late 19th century that diverted water from nearby reservoirs for agriculture and urban development near Morro Bay Village Hall and other new settlements such as Agua Caliente (then called Mission Viejo) and Guadalupe (later renamed La Jolla). By 1910 there were more than 300 people living in Morro Bay; by 1920 it had grown to over 1,000 people with a school district that included Morro Bay Village Hall, Mazatlan Heights Elementary School, Asuncion Middle School, Vista del Mar High School, Northshore Junior/Senior High School, Lighthouse Reef Middle/Senior High School and Seaside Intermediate/Junior High SCHOOL.) The Morro Bay Naval Air Station (MB NAS) is a decommissioned naval air station located in Morro Bay, California. It was used as an installation for the United States Navy's P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft from 1951 to 1957. The MB NAS was also home to the Republic F-4 Phantom II fighter jet squadron from 1958 to 1962 and the Republic F-105 Thunderchief bomber squadron from 1963 to 1975. The site of MB NAS is now a federally owned public land parcel that includes a range, picnic area, and boat landing.
