The United States Army Garrison Mountain View was established in 1849 as part of the California Gold Rush. The detachment became a military post in 1861 and served as an artillery depot until 1865. In 1868, the post became an infantry battalion and was redesignated 1st Infantry Battalion, U.S. Army in 1886. The battalion was re-designated 3rd Infantry Battalion, U.S. Army on 1 October 1898 and again in 1903 as part of the 3rd Infantry Division which also included units from adjacent San Francisco County under its command. On 15 November 1907, the division disbanded and all its assets were merged into the newly created 7th Infantry Division which had been organized just days earlier at Fort Donelson, Tennessee under Major General John J Pershing with headquarters at Camp Roberts near Sacramento, California. Headquarters for both divisions were moved to Mountain View on 2 December 1907 where they remained until World War I when their components were recombined back into their respective divisions at Fort Sam Houston south of Austin TX on 14 November 1918 as part of the Fifth Red River Department Command structure subordinate to General Order No 8 “New Mexico” which controlled all US military forces east of Texas A&M University (TAMU) including Mexican troops quartered there since Genesis 10 years before). TheArmy Garrison Mountain View continued functioning through World War II providing recreational services such as golfing; swimming; tennis; bowling; target shooting; fishing and more to soldiers stationed there along with Military Police activities during peacetime while also serving as a hospital during wartime times when necessary either because of natural disasters or enemy actions inside or outside of the garrison limits Inactivated on 25 August 1945 after World War II ended and its assets turned over to civilian control pending disposition by National Defense Authority's Disposition Commission
