The city was founded by two brothers, George and Gordon Moore, in 1969 as a research and development center for the Silicon Valley computer companyIBM. Mountain View became an independent city on January 1, 1974. The population was 793,815 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in what is now Mountain View were Native Americans who hunted and gathered natural resources around present-day Oracle Lake. In 1847, Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portolà passed through this area while seeking passage to Mexico City from Santa Cruz Island. This area became part of Rancho San Lorenzo when it was granted to José Antonio Buenavista in 1854 by Governor Manuel Nieto de la Barca. In 1865, Apple Inc., led by John Sculley, decided to establish a separate headquarters for its new Macintosh computer product line in response to IBM's monopoly on desktop computers that year. However, because no one wanted to share office space with Apple products or use IBM terminals at their workstations (IBM had dominated both the computing world and industry standards at that time), Sculley's decision failed to take hold among the company's employees and he soon retired from Apple instead of follow suit.
