Coffee became popularized as a beverage after French explorer Duarte Barbosa discovered Indonesia’s Sumatra island in 1602 and then went on to explore other parts of Southeast Asia. He introduced coffee drinking to Dutch traders who then began importing Indonesian coffee into Amsterdam. By 1610, Dutch traders had founded Jakarta (later Jakarta Selatan) as their trading center because they could find no other place where coffee was grown near major markets like London or Rome. In 1621, Dutch traders set up a permanent settlement on Java which became known as Batavia (later Jakarta). They started growing coffee trees there and exporting beans back home. Dutch traders also started selling products made from roasted coffee beans such as chocolate and soapstone carvings…
