One major early African American settler was Elijah Muhammad who arrived here from New York City in 1911 after escaping racial discrimination there at the hands of white Americans. In 1935, race riots erupted across North America when integration became an issue following passage of laws supporting segregated schools throughout Southern United States by President Franklin D Roosevelt (D-NY). Many black Americans fled southward into what became known as "The Great Migration". Thousands more African Americans followed suit over ensuing years until all but 10% of Mountain View's residents were white Latino/o at the end of World War II . During post-World War II period many new businesses were established downtown such as Google, Apple Inc., Oracle Corporation (now Sun Microsystems), Intel Xeon Processor microprocessor company etc.), among others while older businesses either closed or evolved into new forms such as Safeway supermarket chain which has been headquartered here since 1951 or Bechtel Corp., later part owner Yahoo! Inc., which built its first headquarters on Coyote Road adjacent to Google Campus in 2004
Mountain View was founded on December 6, 1887 by George Westinghouse and his brother, Elias Howe. The city's original name was "East Palo Alto." In 1896, the city annexed the adjacent town of Mountain View.
