Military gift history in Mountain View, California began with the founding of the United States military base at Fort Point on San Francisco Bay in 1849. The U.S. Army arrived in town and initially used Fort Point as a powder magazine and barracks. In 1853, fortification work was begun on what would become Fort Point Naval Shipyard, which would later become one of the major naval facilities in the world. In 1865, the Coast Guard detachment at Fort Point became part of the newly created Navy when San Francisco became a port city. The first ship to be launched from what is now Pier 39 at Hunters Point was USS Constitution on October 12th, 1865. Naval ships continued to call atFort Point until 1898 when they were transferred to other ports around the country due to World War I. The next significant event in Mountain View's military gift history occurred during World War II when America's largest arsenal of weapons was established here. The expansive Presidio Armory had been built by local builder George Waddell for $5 million and it quickly became one of Silicon Valley's most important commercial centers for arms sales and procurement operations during World War II. During this time period, Mountain View also became home to two Air Force Wings (the 602d Bombardment Wing from Sacramento County and 1st Tactical Fighter Wing from Hayward), three Marine Corps Battalions (2nd Battalion 7th Marines; 3rd Battalion 5th Marines; 4th Battalion 2nd Marines) as well as various other support organizations including intelligence gathering units such as Station COBRA and Army Intelligence School (later School of Intelligence Studies). During peacetime, many businesses closed their doors or moved out of state because there were no active military forces stationed here aside from a few ceremonial unit deployments here and there over time- notably during Korean War exercises held here between 1951-1953 but never completed due to budgetary constraints within the Pentagon then living in Arlington Heights, Illinois adjacent to Washington D C . However peace returned with an end to hostilities in Vietnam on April 30th1973 after more than 42 years without any physical combat between American troops & North Vietnamese soldiers taking place anywhere inside our borders!* today we still have not seen eye-to-eye with that aggressor nation since!*

Mountain View was founded on December 12, 1879 by John C. Abbot and his wife, Mary Ann Dickinson. The town was named for Mount Mitchell, in North Carolina. In the early 1800s, the area around Mountain View was rich with coal and gold mines. After years of struggle, Mountain View became a thriving city in the late 19th century. Today, Mountain View is one of Silicon Valley's most popular towns and boasts a diverse community that includes scientists and technology workers as well as artists and business owners. Mountain View's history starts with its founding as a small farming village on what is now East Street in north-central Mountain View. The first residents were farmers who had moved from nearby San Francisco to find new land to farm after the 1849Gold Rush ended. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century because of its location at the junction of four wagon trails leading to San Francisco Bay and because it was convenient to other eastern California cities such as Sacramento and Berkeley. By 1870, mountain VIEW had over 100 families living in nine buildings on five acres (2 hectares). By 1880, the population hadgrown to 1,500 people thanks to new arrivals from New York City and Boston who had come for mining opportunities in what is now Silicon Valley. In 1881, John C., an entrepreneur from Massachusetts who had been born into a wealthy family of farmers, bought some property east of downtown Mountain View for $10 per acre ($422 per square mile). He named his new development "MountainView" after Mount Mitchell in North Carolina where he lived with his wife Mary Ann Dickinson until her death in 1902. Over time many famous citizens have resided or worked at MountainView including Driscoll Bennett (founder of Google), Arthur Ashe ( tennis player), Edwin Land (developer of Google Earth), Ewing Halsey (presidential candidate)and more recently Don Cherry (co-founder/CEO/CFO Apple Inc.). During World War II much activity took place at MountainView due to its proximity to government labs like Stanford University's Radiation Laboratory which operated out of Menlo Park across the street from Main Building No 4 which served as both laboratory space and home for nearly 400 scientist during World War II including Ernest Lawrence who developed nuclear weapons; Hans Bethe who discovered helium; Edward Teller whodeveloped Manhattan Project atomic bomb; etc.. The post-war period saw growth in businesses such as retailing giant Sears Roebuck & Co.; ABC Radio Networks' experimental television station KQED; film production companies Paramount Pictures Corporation (-John Huston); United Artists Corporation (+Douglas Fairbanks Sr.)and Universal Studios Hollywood (+Luther Vinge). Finally there was an influx of Californians seeking greener pastures following Proposition 10 - Measure B - which led to tension between those moving westward into farmland while others maintain their ties toOakland County nucleated around Oakland General Hospital which still stands today adjacent to MLK Jr.'s Driveway within walking distance of most students’ homes today... Although economic decline began soon after incorporation as Chamberlin Manufacturing Company when John Chamberlin decided notto build any factories due largely then too high manufacturing costs associated with steel made here rather than aluminum sourced elsewhere,... subsequent successes by various entrepreneurs led eventuallyto reincorporationunder nameGateHouse Ventures effective November 8th 1964....... The first people who settled in Mountain View were Italian immigrants. The first houses were built on the east side of Market Street. The Italians started businesses such as a bakery, grocery store, and laundry shop. In 1851, the United States Post Office was established in Mountain View and the Italians began to send their mail from their homes. They also started to electricity their homes by using kerosene lamps. In 1881, the Mountain View School District was created and the Italians opened a school for girls on 1st Avenue South. In 1923, Mountain View became an independent city and the school district was disbanded. Mountain View's economy changed when Google Inc., which had its headquarters in nearby Palo Alto at that time, moved its research and development activities out of Palo Alto and into Mountain View in 1998. The company has since invested more than $5 billion inoggle Valley campuses over its past 10 years while continuing to invest millions of dollars more each year outside of Valley campuses
