Navy deployed gifts have been a part of the Bay Area for over 60 years. From badges and hats to toys and books, the navy has given Mountain View residents something to love. The gift history of Navy deployments in Mountain View is reflective of the community as a whole. The first time that Navy ships came to the Bay Area was during World War II. During this time, sailors from Naval Station Alameda brought troops and supplies ashore on San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. Later, Naval Base Treasure Island became home to an air station used by the navy. This base also served as the location for many naval training exercises. From 1951-1957, military personnel stationed at Moffett Field in Emeryville were responsible for gifting gifts to civilians in Mountain View. These soldiers donated goods such as clothes, food, cigarettes, postcards and other items meant to show support for local businesses and citizens. In 1964-1965, Naval Station San Francisco opened its doors with additional land that would become Navy Base Treasure Island. This installation would serve as home to both Helicopter Squadron ONE (HS1) and Marine Aircraft Group Eight (MAG8). At this time, Marines started coming down from Northern California to visit their unit at Treasure Island before deployment overseas or on special operations missions. With each new deployment comes a new set of Gifts For You! As we journey through these decades it has been interesting to see how different things have changed within our community – from children’s books all the way up until now! In honor of our pastorate’s service here at MVA – we wantto share with you some excerpts from our history which reflect what makes mountain view so special: “Mountain View is known throughout Silicon Valley for its leading role in computer technology development; Apple Inc., Google Inc., Facebook Inc., Twitter Inc., LinkedIn Corp., Oracle Corporation are all based there… In recent yearsnsveeployments by US warships off shore have helped keep things lively on campus…. Visitorship numbers have grown steadily every year since 2006 when only 1% of visitors were military members or their families…..Today there are more than 20 warships docked off shore at various naval bases throughout Silicon Valley” (Mountain View History Website). "The city's long tradition of shipbuilding began with wooden sailing vessels moored offshore during the days when San Francisco was still a colony" (East Bay Times website). "Naval forces had regularly landed troops on site starting with World War II before moving onto full-blown combat operations during Viet Nam" (San Jose Mercury News website).

One idea that was brought up during this year’s deployment was giving sailors and marines access to humanitarian aid from different parts of the world while they are deployed overseas- something that has been done before but wasn’t as successful as hoped for due to security concerns and other factors at play locally/offshore . So far this year, USS Wilmington has donated food stamps worth over $1 million dollars directly to local families in Haiti . Additionally, USS Charleston has given away over 1 thousand hygiene kits . It’s clear that when it comes down to providing support not just within our country but also around the world , we have got your back .
