The Murrieta Air Force Base is one of the largest and most important airfields in the United States. It was founded in World War II as a military base for the California Air National Guard. After the war, it became an active USAF Base, with a large number of bomber and fighter aircraft. The present-day airfield was built in the early 1960s on land that once served as a munitions plant. In 2003, the USAAF sold off its interest in Murrieta AFB to CA ANG commander Major General James E Myers Jr., who made it an operational CA ANG Base. In 2006, CA ANG took over operations from Davis-Monthan AFB Arizona after they closed their doors. Murrieta AFB has been home to numerous different types of aircraft throughout its history including bombers (the B-29 Superfortress), fighter planes (the F-4 Phantom II and F-5E Tiger), helicopters (an McDonnell Douglas MH-60S Seahawk and Bell AH1 Huey) and ground troops including tanks, armored personnel carriers, artillery pieces, motorcycles etc. The airport also features two runways which are ideal for takeoff and landing of all kinds of airplanes as well as storage areas for both small planes and larger jets. In 1954, Murrieta AFB became home to both NATO's 7th Bombardment Wing (later Ninth Bombardment Wing) and Tactical Air Command's 8th Fighter Wing. These units were reassigned from other bases in California during the Korean War because there was no room at our existing installations for them. In 1957, HQ USAF transferred responsibility for all military activities onMurrieta AFB to Commander Task Force 138 which had been activated earlier that year until then responsible for operations within Coastal Range Defense sectors 1-4 covering most of Southern California including San Diego and Imperial County. Murrieta, California is located in the San Diego County region of southern California. The city is bordered by Interstate 5 to the north and east, and by Riverside County to the south. The first Europeans to visit what is now Murrieta were Spanish explorers on their way from Mexico City tofound new lands in Alta California (the present-day Mexican state of Baja California). They passed through what is now Murrieta on their way north in 1542, when they explored theSan Bernardino Mountains near modern-day Escondido. In 1874, gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill in Anza Borrego Desert, about 12 miles (19 km) northeast of town. The discovery led to an influx of miners into the area; by 1880, Murrieta had become one of the most prosperous mining towns in Northern California. Goldmining continued until about 1920 when production was reduced because developments elsewhere made it more profitable to use other methods such as smelting and refining gold into coins or jewelry than extractable ore from mines; muriatic acid mining also became popular during this time for making lime sulfuric acid for fertilizer rather than gold mining purposes. The post–World War II boom began with large-scale migration from Southern California after World War II ended; many people came here looking for jobs in postwar industries such as engineering and construction; however, many businesses failed during this period because there was no real demand for their products outside ofMurrieta itself. In 1957, developers built a shopping mall which became known as "The Mall" due to its similarity to malls throughout Southern California at that time; However, it failed quickly while creating few jobs outsideofthe city proper although some light manufacturing took place within its boundaries until the early 1990s when those operations were moved out into nearby Riverside County along I-5

They succeeded in doing so, and today Murrieta is home to one of Northern California's most successful post-war redevelopment programs: over $100 million has been invested in new housing, businesses, schools and public facilities since 1978!
