Murrieta is a town located in San Luis Obispo County, California. The population was 25,898 at the 2010 census. Murrieta is also the home of UC Santa Cruz. The name "Murrieta" comes from Spanish and means "little valley." The first people to live in what is now Murrieta were Native Americans who hunted and gathered food near the present-day downtown area. They named their village after a small river that ran through their land. In 1884, when Rancho Rinconada was sold toMexican immigrants, they began to build homes on the rancho. In 1912, when land purchases by local parents resulted in the community's incorporation as a town, murrietans chose to nickname their new town Santa Cruz because it had been part of Mexico until that point. The post office opened in 1916 and remained open until it closed in 1943 due to World War II bombing raids. At that time, mail was carried only between Point Arena and Monterey Bay Common along Route 1 through Guerneville and beyond because the US Postal Service did not want any more communities built on military bases during wartime times. The townsfolk responded by building a new post office which reopened on December 8th of that year with mail service continuing northward until May 6th of 1951 when all services were withdrawn due to political reasons related to the Korean War; then again from May 6th-December 5th because ofChristmas tree lighting festivities around that time.
