The first Europeans to visit Murrieta were Spanish explorers in 1769, and later Mexican soldiers who fought in the 1846-1848 war for independence from Mexico. In 1853, America's first railway reached Murrieta when the San Gabriel Valley Railroad was built through it. murrieta post office opened on July 24, 1853. In 1886, John Sutter discovered gold near present day Murrieta and named it after him. In 1906, citrus fruit magnate James Wolk founded Orange groves hereabouts where he would grow oranges for his orchard companies across Southern California and Nevada until his death in 1966 (he had some land patented as well). At the time of his death he had papers worth $5 million which are still being held by descendants today During World War II there was significant development within Murrieta as many local businesses produced munitions including MUD (machinery used in making concrete) plants operated by National Defense Research Committee (NDRC), United States Army Ordnance Corps' 9th Engineer Battalion plant No 2 (Engineers'), Packard-built aircraft production line No 1 at Laguna Honda Airfield and other plants used to produce arms and ammunition for both military forces and civilians throughout the country . All these operations stopped during 1945 due to war shortages however afterwards many of these plants recommenced operations under new ownership . It is part of the Greater Riverside metropolitan area and is served by the Murrieta Unified School District. The first Europeans to visit what is now Murrieta were Spanish missionaries who came in 1769-1770. Rancho Laguna de Santa Ana was patented to José Francisco Nieto on February 2, 1812. The name had been chosen because of how close it would be to Mount Diablo – hence "Laguna" meaning "lake". In 1827, General Antonio López Camacho granted Rancho Laguna de Santa Ana to Juan Bautista Alvarado for his rancho stretching from Monterey Bay to present-day Paso Robles. Mexican land grants continued through most of California until the Mexican–American War (1846-48). On March 20, 1847, Governor Manuel Micheltorena issued a proclamation creating the Town of Los Angeles with a population of 10 families and granting them town rights over Laguna de Santa ana which then became known as Mission Dolores due to its proximity there. In 1863 Englishman John Sutter arrived in what is now San Bernardino County and started an era that saw some large scale changes in Southern California with huge new discoveries including oil rigs off our coast and developments such as Palmdale which later spawned Hollywood moguls like Cecil B DeMille On December 7th 1860 gold was found near Peñaloza by Capt David Williams while prospecting for gold along side his partners James Irvine and George Stephenson Some buildings were built soon after this event such as Mrs Norma Etheridge's home which still stands today on North Side Street between Clarendon Avenue and Vine Street Named after her: Nellie Wright Wright House remains one of only two houses remaining in Murrieta that was originally built during this time period
