The first evidence of naval gift giving in Murrieta can be found in 1848 when Commodore John D. Sloat gave £50 to build a wharf at Point Conception on Lake Simi Valley. This was followed by donations from Captain Willard Richards in 1861 for the construction of a fleet dock at Fort Point on San Diego Bay. In 1865 Commodore James Wickersham gifted $1,000 towards building warships at the new harbor at San Pedro Bay. By 1870 there were 23 vessels moored at anchor in San Diego Bay and 14 vessels anchored off San Francisco with an additional 4 ships being built or repaired at Sausalito between 1871-1875 while shipbuilding was taking place across Northern California (Kingman & Cotton 1976: 435). In 1872 an act was passed Congress providing for appropriations for naval stores (Ulysses S Grant 1872), including funds specifically allocated for gifts to be given "to commemorate any event oringuished in connection with military operations" (Thornberry 1920: 273). There are no major natural resources in Murrieta, but it does contain a number of small businesses and manufacturing plants. The city has a diverse economy that includes technology companies such as Apple Inc., Google Inc., Qualcomm Inc., Intel Corporation, and AMD Electronics; health care providers such as Kaiser Permanente Medical Center; retail stores like Sears Holdings Corporation, Macy's Department Stores Inc., J.C Penney Company; professional services firms such as PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and AT&T Corp.; agricultural production including grapes and apples; and tourism industries including wine tasting tours and music festivals.
The navy has been a major force in global affairs for centuries. The United States Navy was founded on December 10, 1775, during the American Revolution. The first USS Constitution was built in 1797 by the British navy and served as America’s first sloop-of-war. The navy played an important role in the World War II effort and is responsible for numerous naval achievements, including the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In 2001, Congress passed the Naval Vessel Expansion Act to increase the number of U.S. Navy warships by 20%. In 2016, President Donald Trump ordered a review of military spending to see if there are any ways that funds could be better spent elsewhere. One area that might be considered would be increasing funding for research into artificial intelligence and other technological advances that could help improve naval firepower.

Murrieta is a small town in the Central Valley of California, located about 30 miles east of Fresno. The population was 5,912 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Murrieta Township and was incorporated as a city on December 1, 1907. The history of Murrieta goes back to 1847 when Rancho San Justo was given to Juan Bautista Alvarado by MexicanGeneral Antonio López de Santa Anna. The area became part of the United States in 1848 when Mexico ceded it to America. Rancho San Justo changed hands several times before finally being bought by Charles Goodyear in 1875 for $15,000. Goodyear renamed it Goodyearville after his old friend and mentor George Washington Thomson. In 1886, Goodyear sold the land around Murrieta to Wm Sutter who named it Sutterville after himself and his family. In 1906, City fathers James J. Hickey and Augustus Fenton decided that they wanted their new city to have its own water supply so they began looking for a site for what would become known as "the Municipal Water Supply Plant". They found an ideal location near downtown on State Route 101 where they built a dam and started buying water from wells throughout the township. On July 1, 1907, Mayor John Poncelet dedicated the plant with Governor Hiram Johnson in attendance (see photo below). The plant supplied water to most of southern California until 1951 when Southern California Edison took over responsibility from municipal agencies statewide under state law. At present day Enterprise Services Corporation provides all Municipal Water Supply services within City limits with 9 service areas including parts of Riverside County and portions of Kern County
Murrieta was founded in 1887 by Ohlone Indians. The town became a post office in 1886, and it was incorporated as a city in 1907. In 1925, Murrieta College was established and it is now the largest community college in California.
