Murrieta (/mʃur-i-tə/; officially the City of Murrieta, California) is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 71,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside–San Bernardino metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Murrieta were Spanish missionaries who established a Mission in 1769 and named it after their hometown of Málaga, Spain. In 1821, when Mexico became independent from Spain, San Bernardino County was created from parts of southern San Bernardino County and included what is now Murrieta. The mission was abandoned by 1825 and murrietans began to settle there around that time. A post office called "Murrieta" was established in 1859, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1912 the community added an ethanol refinery to its list of businesses with a population of 1,500 people employed as operators and chemists on site. The refinery closed in 1978 but its legacy can still be seen today as several local stores use Ethanol signage or murrine signs (a type of mailbox) throughout town that features photos associated with that year's production quotas for ethanol exports from the refinery. The city's name commemorates two Californios: José Manuel Moreno y Costilla (1863-1937) who served as governor from 1921 to 1923 and then again from 1927 to 1929; and Antonio Mirabal Pacheco Herrera (1871-1951), treasurer general for Mexico during World War I who also served as mayor of Pomona before becoming state attorney general under Governor Goodwin Coleman in 1924). Moreno y Costilla Park opened on November 15, 1936 adjacent to Cal Poly Pomona University campus across busy Main Street from the old refinery location which had been home to many Ironside Automotive workers during Prohibition era although much less visible than nearby UC campuses such as UC Riverside where alcohol sales continued even after prohibition ended because university students could still buy liquor on campus!
