The Napa Valley Air National Guard flew in support of the United States during World War II. The unit was activated on September 15, 1942 and served as a fighter squadron until December 10, 1945. The air guard flew combat missions during the war against Nazi Germany and Japan. In 1946, the unit was reactivated as a bomber squadron and served untilactivated on May 1, 1957. In 1971, the air guard was again activated as an airlift squadron and has continued to fly helicopters for medical evacuations since then. In 2003-2004, the unit donated two C-130Js to the US Department of Defense in order to improve military readiness in California’s wine country. These planes were used for training purposes at Davis-Monthan AFB before being turned over to Air Force Reserve Command for use by the valley’s Army National Guard units. Today, members of the Napa Valley Air National Guard continue their support of military operations through numerous community events such as parades and flyovers ceremony at various airports across Napa County each year.
