The California Army National Guard (CA ANG) is one of the most diverse and well-trained military organizations in the United States. The CA ANG has a rich history dating back to 1851, when it was first organized as the 1st Regiment California Volunteers. The regiment served in various conflicts including the Mexican-American War and World War II. The CA ANG also played an important role during the Vietnam War, with units being deployed to both South Vietnam and Laos. Today, the CA ANG oversees over 130,000 soldiers and airmen across 9 states and 350 miles of coastline. The origins of the CA ANG can be traced back to 1851 when it was first organized as 1st Regiment California Volunteers. During its early years, the regiment fought primarily against Native Americans in what is now southern California. In 1872, following passage of the Morrill Act which provided for federal control of education within state borders, 1st Regiment Californians were given their own schoolhouse on Fort Ord in San Diego County. This began what would become a long legacy of service to education within southeastern California – something that continues today with two branches of the CA ANG providing undergraduate instruction at Monterey Peninsula University and Cal Poly Pomona respectively. In 1915, following World War I’s end, 1st Regiment Californians were called into federal service as part of Project Exile which aimed to reintegrate former Spanish American veterans into civilian life in North America. After serving honorably through World War I they returned home but were again called into federal service duringWorldWarII under termsofthe Manhattan Project program which aimed to develop nuclear weapons capable of hitting any target on Earth! As part of this effort1Rifleman from 1st Regimental Combat Team (1/CAT), commonly known as “Ziggy” became oneofthefirstAmericanstoenterJapansouseofwarheadquartersduringthewar! Afterthewar ended however1 RCTwas redesignated 2nd Battalion (5th Infantry) Califomiansand remainedin Japan until 1945 when it returned home! Following World War II there was a large increase in military activity throughout Southern California due to tensions between both sides in Korea and Japan arising from that conflict! In 1951 1/CAT was redesignated 3rd Battalion (7th Infantry). It would remain here until 1958 when it was reactivated under new commandment known as Headquarters & Headquarters Troop (H&HT), headquartered at Fort Bragg near Raleigh NC where it would stay until 1970 before being disbanded once again under new commandment known as 8th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (8IBCT)! Upon disbanding 8IBCT relocated its headquarters to Napa County where it currently resides! Today, there are multiple branches within the CA ANG responsible for different aspects of military function within southeastern California including infantry battalions; artillery battalions; aviation battalions; ranger battalions; combat support brigades; engineer brigades; counterintelligence brigades; Specialty Units such as Charlie Company(Ammunition battalion); Delta Company(Infantry battalion); Illicit Drug Enforcement Task Force(Drug enforcement unit); Support Squadron(Air refueling squadron)); Search & Rescue Squadron.(Search & Rescue unit)). Each branch offers unique capabilities and responsibilities ensuring that each soldierservingwithinCAANGultimatelyserveshis or herstateandnationwith distinction!

The battalion saw action at what is now known as the Battle of Presidio Heights, and was also present at the Battle of Chihuahua.
