Napa, California has a long and varied history. It was founded by the brothers John and Sebastien Monterey in 1797 as a small farming community on the Napa River. The area that is now Napa County was first reported to be under wine growing jurisdiction in 1795. In 1847, Napa became part of California when it became a state. From then until 1969, the county seat of Napa was at Yountville. The name “Napa” is from the Latin word for “vineyard” and refers to its position along the north bank of the river where wines were traditionally produced. The initial population of about 1,500 people lived around Yountville during its early years. By 1850, however, there were over 20 families living in Napa County; most were farmers who had moved from other parts of California or Europe to try their luck in this new land. Wine production quickly became an important part of life in this region and helped make Napa County one of America’s leading wine-producing regions during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Today, vineyards cover some 350 miles (560 km) across three counties – Mendocino (the northernmost), Sonoma (the southernmost), and Franciscan (the easternmost). Some 5 million gallons (20 million litres) of wine are produced annually in these three counties alone! During World War II, many businesses including breweries and stores located near Highway 101 found themselves requisitioned for military use such as airfields or plutonium production plants. Many local residents also worked on various war-related projects such as manufacturing munitions or assembling tanks or ships at gunpoint. As a result, much local history still remains hidden from view due to lack of preserved materials or records dating back more than half a century!
