The Napa Valley National Guard was founded on Dec. 14, 1854 in the town of Yountville. The first unit was organized and ordered to duty at the request of President Santa Anna. In 1860, the first regiment was called to duty for two years in the Mexican-American War. On July 4, 1862, California became a state and the National Guard became part of the newly formed state government. The organization grew rapidly and by 1865 there were over 100 companies organized into four regiments totaling 1,500 men. From 1868 until 1902 there was no peacetime service requirement for members of the National Guard but all soldiers must be freeholders or residents of Napa County who could show proof of residency. In 1903, Governor Gold Rush hardliner William Hahn vetoed a bill that would have allowed citizens from outlying areas such as Petaluma to volunteer for military service in support of industry during World War I; however, this did not stop many individuals from signing up with units throughout western California. In 1916 both chambers passed a bill creating a Selective Service System that required men aged 25 or younger to register with local governments and demonstrate an intention to serve in war or national defense; those who failed to do so were drafted into military service without any opportunity for protest or appeal. After World War I ended and troops returned home there was much debate over whether or not the Guard should be disbanded; however, it continued grow steadily with new recruits being drawn from all walks of life including women and African Americans who had never before been involved in American military forces. On May 6, 1942 the armistice ending World War II brought an end to hostilities between America and Japan; accordingly, all active United States military forces were disbanded except for Army Reserve units scattered around California which remained activated until 1945 under various names including Air Defense Command Pacific (ADC-P), Far East Air Force (FEAF), Western Area Defense Forces (WADF), also known as First Battalion/Third Regiment Infantry (1st Bn/3rd Rgt) because it arrived too late in WW2 - it is now known as Alta Loma National Military Park's "First Battalion" Museum Unit]. Troops assigned permanently outside California are still listed on DoD rolls as "Active Duty US Army." With World War II behind us most troops were voluntarily retired rather than being drafted again into federal service like they had done duringWWI; however some troops decided they wanted more outoflife then just retirement so they registered with local militias forming battalions which later became divisions.......
