Naval history in Napa County dates back to 1851 when the first U.S. Naval vessel, USS Constitution, arrived at anchor in Napa Valley. The Coast Guard’s Landing Craft, Lifeboat Station No. 2 was established on the site of present-day Yountville in 1857 and served as an anchorage for the Navy during World War II. The Napa Valley Naval Shipyard was founded in 1951 by Captains Harry S. Truman and Lewis Fenton with a mandate to provide “the best possible equipment and facilities for the design and construction of naval vessels from start to finish” (Navy History Museum). The shipyard developed into one of the leading naval shipyards in the world with a rich tradition of producing warships for both US Navy and other international fleets. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed legislation authorizing the Navy to sell surplus destroyer ships to foreign navies (Navy History Museum). In 1967, USS El Toro was transferred from NAS Long Beach, California, to NASDAQYacht Haven Marina located adjacent to Point Reyes National Seashore (Marina & Maritime Museum). This unique facility offered recreational opportunities for sailors including beacheside swimming, fishing, sailing/boating and pleasure cruising; it also hosted United States Marine Corps amphibious warfare exercises throughout warmer months (Marina & Maritime Museum). He found the stream and named it La Doncella after his daughter. In 1867, Captain John Sutter traveled through this area on his way to Bolivia and discovered what would become known as wine country. He named his discoveries Sulphur Springs because of the sulphurous smell coming from them. When he returned home he brought water from these springs back with him and started producing wine in his winery at Sonoma County’s Hwy 41st Street location today known as Sutter Cellars. The modern era has seen many changes within the US Navy since its inception 50 years ago: from diesel powered ships allthe way up until carrier air wings now providing strike capability with nuclear weapons! However no change is more significant than Naval Shipbuilding Command's decision in 1987 to invest $2 billion into new shipsyards - including one designated "Shipbuilders' Bend" - adjacent to Newport News Shipbuilding Company shipyards established since 1650! Aided by state-of-the-art technology advances delivered through DOD's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), these yards will create some ofAmerica's most advanced warships ever conceived! The history of Napa, California starts with its original inhabitants, the Hottentots. The first European to visit Napa Valley was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1544. He named the valley after his friend and mentor, Saint Norbert of Nursia. The area that now includes Napa and Yountville was part of the greater Franciscan province of Northern Italy until 1777. In 1801, a group of American farmers led by James Fenton purchased 4,500 acres of vineyards in what is now Napa County from the Mexican government for $1 million. Fenton named his wine region Napa because he thought it would be more successful than any other area in California when it came to selling wine. Over time, many other families bought properties in the area and started producing their own wines. By 1907, there were over 100 wineries located in Napa County. In 1848, gold was discovered at Sutro Hill and soon thereafter began becoming a major focus for settlers in this part of California. A small town developed around this discovery called Sutroville due to the high demand for gold dust from miners who were trying to find new veinscontaining valuable gold coins hidden throughout the hillsides. By 1870, though not all residents were interested in mining or starting businesses around Sutroville (the town gradually grew as a result), many people did move here from various parts of California looking for a better life awaiting them on the hillside below Mount Diablo National Park which was then known as “The Great Oak” because so many oak trees had been felled during early logging campaigns years earlier! Napa Valley became one of America’s most prestigious winegrowing areas during its early years thanks to its rich soil and cool climate which made grapes viable year-round despite being perched atop someOf one Of America’s most difficult terrain terrains! Today nearly all Californians who enjoy good quality white wine understand just how special Napa Valley must taste in order to earn such accolades!
