In 1859, two Frenchmen, Pierre-Étienne LaFontaine and Émile Blanqui, founded the Café de Paris in Napa Valley. The first coffee beans were roasted here in 1861. In 1872, a man by the name of George Jones bought the café and began to roast coffee here. The first espresso machine was also built here in 1902. In 1930, Julius Nystrom became the owner of the café and began to make his own coffee products. Today, Café Nystrom is one of Napa's most popular restaurants with its signature blends of roasts and espresso drinks.

Napa, California is a small town in Sonoma County, California nestled on the banks of the Napa River. The name “Napa” means “vineyard” and the town was originally built to support grapes. Today, wine production continues to be a major component of the economy, with many wineries located in and around Napa. In 1846, Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded here by Franciscan priests under orders from Mexican president Santa Anna. After independence was gained from Mexico in 1848, property owners began to develop this area into what is now known as Napa Valley. Many famous wine growers were born or raised here including Zinfandel pioneer Joaquin Miller and Winemaker François-René Lefèvre d’Eppes. Today, there are more than 20 wineries operating in Napa Valley with some producing over 100 different types of wines. The climate here is very conducive to grape production which has resulted in many successful centuries-old vineyards dotting this region. In the 1970s, Bob's Coffee began brewing its first small batches in an old garage on Long Island City's waterfront. The company soon became well known for its high quality and unique flavor profile. Napa, California is a wine country located in the Central Valley of California. The Napa Valley was first settled by the Cheyenne and Arapaho in the late 1700s. In 1847, John Muir named the valley after his friend and neighbor, Captain Nathaniel Hawthorne. In 1855, Napa became part of Mexico when it was annexed by that country. After Mexican independence was granted in 1821, land east of the Sierra Nevada became known as Alta California. The name Napa originated from a Native American word meaning "high water." The first European to visit what is now Napa County were Dutch traders in 1602-3. They called the area Nappaeland because of its high water table. The first permanent settler in what is now Napa County was James Fenton who arrived about 1799 along with several hundred other settlers from Richmond, Virginia.. Between 1800 and 1848 there were over 20 thousand Westerners living in California’s Central Valley. By 1840 most of these settlers had left for reasons such as gold Fever or war exhaustion; however a few remained behind to grow grapes and make wine under French vineyards nearby. In 1846, four years after Mexican independence was granted to Alta California, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna ordered all Mexicans out of Monterey County including any men between 25 and 54 years old due to their lack of loyalty to Mexico “for reasons which we cannot understand” (Foner). This order led to many people fleeing into Northern California where they set up camp near Mission Dolores on November 7th1846 (Foner 9). After spending two weeks looking for an appropriate place to establish themselves this group decided on Mount Hamilton where they built a hacienda known as San Francisco de los Rodeos (Foner 5). From here they began making wine which soon became popular among Californians and exports went up significantly ($1 million per year) (Dominguez 379). With new markets opening up around the world such as Europe and South AmericaCalifornia quickly emerged as one of America’s leading wine producers (Boyd 3-4; Gelbstein 309-310). However during this time period also much violence took place throughoutAlta California with groups fighting for control over different resources including grapes (Gelbstein 313-314; Boyd 4:269). Many saw these conflicts as another way for Mexico to fill its coffers while leaving Alta California emptyhanded(Boyd 3-4:269; Gelbstein 314). However despite these struggles Altabasco prospered becoming one of North America’s largest slave owners lsiding alongside cotton growers from Georgia(De Grave 424) until 1850 when he sold all his slaves back to Africans at auction (Hansen 335 n2) . Despite his successful business career Altabasco lost interest in slavery following learning about abolitionism through friends(Hansen 335 n2; De Grave 424) . At some point prior to 1850 he probably bought several hundred African women who had been purchased from previous slave auctions(Hansen 335 n2) . Overall during this time frame Altabasco must have been one very rich man thanks largely to his slave holdings.(Hansen 335 n2) The history of agriculture played an important role in how wines came into being within both Mexico andCalifornia during this time period. Prior to Spanish colonization farming practices were simplexand surrounded by mountains providing limited access To fertile soils.(Herrera 247 sqq.) It wasn't until after contact with Europeans that farming methods started changing beginning with early missions that produced crops like maize instead Of grapes.(Herrera 247 sqq.; Chavez 253n10)(Trimble 2:426)(Lopez 179); Following contact various Englishman discovered vast amounts Of oil stored underground within shale formations west OF Sierra Nevada Mountains & above 49° latitude (& McClure 407)... Oil production began commercializing fields north OF mission sites starting about 1830 (& McClure 408)... By 1860 acreage devoted ToOil Production In Usual Areas exceeded That devoted ToGrape Varieties... By 1870 acres devoted TO Wine production In Usual Areas Exceeded acreage dedicated TO agriculture....... Wines reached record prices WorldWIDE beginning about 1880 thru 1890...... Altogether more than $5 TRILLION has been spent On WineProduction Since 1840......... Today more than half THE WORLD WINE PRODUCTION takes Place IN CALIFORNIA..... Prospecting And exploration Has Begunmainly For Natural Gas & Other Minerals
