The National City Air Force Base in California is home to the United States Air Force's Ninth Air Force. The base was established in 1942 and has been a major center for air power operations throughout World War II and the Korean War. The Ninth Air Force currently deploys more than 350 military, civilian, and support personnel worldwide. In 1957, the Ninth Air Force stationed an electronic intelligence squadron at NCAFB. This squadron was one of the first units in the USAF to use computers for intelligence gathering purposes. In 1978, NCAFB became a key command center for air operations during Operation Desert Storm. Today, NCAFB houses two fighter squadrons (the 388th Fighter Wing and 493d Fighter Squadron) as well as two ground forces brigades (the 1st Brigade Combat Team and 2nd Brigade Combat Team). These organizations provide air superiority over Iraq and Kuwait during hostilities while also providing humanitarian access to civilians affected by conflict. On September 11th, 2001, the Ninth Air Force played a critical role in supporting Operation Northern Watch which was motivated by 9/11 Commission inquiries into U.S military response to Terrorism. In 1957, General Electric Company donated a TV set and other equipment to the USAF stationed at Yuma Proving Grounds, Arizona. This was followed by donations from other companies such as Raytheon Company in 1958 when they sent A-10 Warthogs to be used by both the Air Force and Marine Corps. This was also the first time that helicopters were being used by either service. In 1959, General Electric Company donated two trucks and four trailers valued at $2 million to be used by both services at Kadena AB, Okinawa. During this time period, many Gifts were given through private individuals and organizations such as Boeing Company who donated airplanes, missiles, tanks and tools among other things. It wasn’t until 1969 that active duty members were able to receive gifts from their home country’s government like Japan did during World War II when they contributed food products like sushi rice etcetera back then too!
