National City is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 721,811 at the 2010 census. It is the sixth-largest city in San Diego County and the fifth-largest city east of Interstate 5. The name of National City comes from its location on both sides of what was then called New Mexico Creek, which flows through the city. The area that now makes up National City first came under Spanish control in 1542 as part of Alta California. In 1821, Mexican nationals married into English families and began to develop this land as part of their new homeland. Santa Fe Trail founder Manuel Micheletto built his home here in 1827 and named it after himself—a title he had been given by United States President James K. Polk when Micheletto visited America for the first time on October 12, 1829. It wasn’t until 1836 that General Antonio López de Santa Anna founded San Diego Mission Presidio (later known as Mission San Diego), bringing about increased Anglo settlement in what would become National City proper. By 1850, there were 10 buildings within 1 mile (1 km) of each other – all but one now gone or undergoing renovation: Rancho del Norte residences such as Los Olivos (now El Cajon Hills) sat behind high walls with Watchung Mountain visible across their property boundaries; they enjoyed privacy while Lt.-Governor José Figueroa made decisions without public scrutiny back then.
