National City, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 32,703 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area and Metropolitan Statistical Area. National City was founded on September 16, 1853 by George W. National and his brother-in-law Major John Sutter from upriver from their previous settlement at Placerville (now Riverside). The area that would become National City had been surveyed for years as part of a campaign led by Captain Gabriel Daviess to purchase land grants for settlers in what is now Southern California. On May 14, 1851, Daviess and six other Californians met with Governor Manuel Michelino to present their case for why they should be granted lands east of the San Andreas Fault. After much discussion and without providing any financial assistance from Michelino, the group disbanded. On September 16, 1853, General George Armstrong Custer's column stopped at what is now called Monument Valley while crossing the Mojave Desert north of Palm Springs; when news reached Nacoochee Ranch about this event it inspired Colonel James Winchester to start a new Mormon colony west of Los Angeles in what would become Springdale or Lomita Peninsula (later known as Echo Park). At first there were only 30 men living on site but soon enough others joined them including some family members of Captain Daviess who also homesteaded in East Mesa near today's Chavez Ravine Boulevard and First Street intersection. Today many people believe that Humboldt Bay contributed significantly to early settlement choices made here such as readily accessible water supplies which allowed pioneers like Captain Daviess to establish permanent homes while also avoiding long journey across open country during those early days of settler growth throughout southern California

National City was founded in 1851 as a small Mexican settlement on the rancho of José María Castro. In 1861, it became part of Mexico City and adopted its current name, National City. The city’s first mayor was Don Pedro Alvarenga y Costilla. It was during this time that the city began to develop into a major commercial center with a thriving burro trade. By 1865, National City had become one of the largest cities in Mexico with a population of over 50,000 people. In 1892, the United States conquered California and gained control over what is now Nevada and Arizona Territory. As part of this conquest, President George Washington gave Mexican land east of Sacramento to American citizens for speculative gold mining purposes. This area became known as Nevada County and included much of what is now National City. The region saw heavy immigration from China and other parts of Asia during this time and various Chinese-owned businesses thrived in National City including opium dens and gambling houses which helped to fuel social unrest among immigrant groups who were competing for scarce jobs and housing opportunities. In 1916, Mayor Isaac Newton Young merged two local newspapers – The Californian (founded in 1872) and The San Francisco Examiner (founded in 1875) into one organization called The Chronicle which later became THE LA Times Company. During World War I, National City played an important role as a transportation hub due to its location at the junction of several transcontinental railways. After the war, many manufacturing plants opened up within the city limits while downtown experienced rapid growth culminating with the construction of the US Capitol Building in 1911 which soon replaced San Francisco’s Chinatown as both a business district and cultural center for North Central California
