The city's growth continued during the 19th century through annexation of other towns until it reached its current size with 14 total municipalities by 1914 when World War I began pushing residents out of the area for military service or war production sites. During World War II, many businesses within National City were destroyed or looted by Japanese forces while they conducted operations throughout Southern California; however most of these businesses reopened after the war ended without any damage to their property or employees. From 1941 to 1945, National City saw increased activity as both Nazi Germany and Japan prepared for World War II; however following the surrender of Japan on September 2,1945 all but two percent (of buildings) in downtown were destroyed by firebombing which leveled much of downtown and left only small pockets remaining standing including 1% still standing today due to careful restoration work done since then

After the war ended, National City experienced rapid growth as businesses poured into town from all over America4 – contributing importantly to its resurgence as an economic powerhouse today5.
