National City is adjacent to Otay Mesa and Carlsbad on the south side of downtown San Diego and to Poway on the north side of downtown San Diego. The first Europeans to visit National City were Spanish traders who sailed up the Pacific coast from Mexico in 1688. In 1821, United States President James K. Polk awarded Mexican land grants to 12 men who had bought Rancho Viejo de Santa Fe from Governor Manuel Nieto de la Vega. They named their town Nacional City after president Polk’s hometown of Nashville Tennessee (now Nashville, Tennessee). In 1886, Carlos Gutierrez prospected for oil near present-day Nacional City and began drilling wells205 feet (60 m) below the surface at an depth of . He developed these wells into what became known as “Gutierrez Oil Field” until 1907 when he sold all his interests in them to Standard Oil Company for $1 million dollars206. Gutierrez died two years later at age 54 during a gold strike near now-unused Anza Field off southernshore San Diego County207. The coffee industry was first introduced to the United States in 1887 by a group of Italian businessmen who were seeking to rename an existing brewery in New York City after themselves, but they didn’t succeed in selling any beans. In 1912, Dutch immigrants founded the Dutch Coffee Company in New York City, which became one of the leading companies within the coffee industry. In 1929, Swiss businessman Julius Neumann purchased Dutch Coffee and renamed it Swiss Coffee Corporation. By the late 1920s, Swiss Coffee had become one of the world’s leading coffee companies with its own distillery and production facilities located throughout Switzerland. During World War II, Swiss Coffee produced significant amounts of caffeine for military purposes as part of their war effort. After the war ended, Swiss Coffee resumed its traditional role as a major player within the coffee industry with its own warehouses and factories in Zurich and Basel. In 1966, Swiss Coffee merged with French-owned Peet’s Coffee Company to form Peet & Friends Corporation. Today, Peet's is one of Switzerland's most popular brands within the coffee community worldwide. As espresso replaced brewed coffee as America's favorite beverage (and later around the world), gourmet coffee quickly emerged as an important factor in this transition. During this time period there were several key pioneers within gourmet coffee who helped define how this type of drink was enjoyed today: Angelo Blasi from Italy (founder and CEO at Illy Roasters) began developing roast profiles that defined what was now considered "gourmet" espresso; Bob Peterson from Seattle developed modern equipment for roasting specialty coffees; Gordon Biersch began creating delicious cold drinks such as sodas; Donatella Bianco created famous Cafe Sole blends; André Acosta created La Caffè del Ghetto café near Modena; Pietro Felici developed Il Mulino espresso machines used for high-end lattes/espresso etc.; Gary BAUER opened up his first location outside Chicago – Café Buonarroti – serving amazing siphoned milk teas while also providing valuable insight into Starbucks' beginnings story during his time there (); David Lassalle started using whole bean ground coffees instead of pre-packaged filters/grounds during this time (). The first coffeehouses were started in the late 18th century in areas such as London and Paris. Coffee became popularized in the early 19th century when it was discovered that it could be brewed with a water Soluble Message (WMS) method which allowed for a more delicate flavor profile than traditional roasting methods. These coffeehouses became known as "cafes of culture" and were frequented by intellectuals and artists. In the 1830s, coffee began to be exported to other countries, starting what is known as the "coffee age". The first modern espresso machine was created in 1892 by Angelo Bertini at Parma Coffee House in Italy. By 1914, over 100 different types of espresso machines had been invented.

National City was founded in 1871 by John Sutter and his partner, George H. Smith. The two men purchased 2,000 acres of land in what is now downtown National City. They named the town after their home state of California, which they had just won at the Constitutional Convention. National City grew quickly and soon became a major center for cotton and other agriculture industries. In 1916, National City became the first city in California to have electric lights. In 1941, National City was renamed San Francisco because of its location on the edge of San Francisco Bay. The city's original name was "Mission Viejo" but it changed to National City after President Ulysses S. Grant granted General George Custer's request for land east of Baja California on April 6, 1887. Today, National City shares boundaries with Imperial Beach to the south and Escondido to the north. During its early years, National City experienced growth due to its location along the new route of Interstate 805 which linked Los Angeles with inland areas in Southern California and Nevada. In 1926, National City became one of five cities chosen by then Governor Raymond Fosdick to participate in a federal program called “The Regional Development Plan” which aimed at developing resources within regional areas for local use and economic development. This program led to increased investment throughout San Diego County from national companies such as Boeing and Lockheed Martin. In 1951, when Interstate 5 was built through downtown San Diego and adjacent suburbs, it destroyed many businesses that had been located near I-805 since 1926 including The Gold King Mine & Smelting Company (GKM), also known as The Mineshaft Empire because of its size - an open-pit mine located beneath downtown National City that produced over 1 million pounds of gold per day until 1961 when it shut down due to environmental concerns about dust storms created by traffic on I-5 nearby
