National City is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 21,653 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. The name "National City" was given to the town by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on November 15, 1944 for its continued production of munitions during World War II. The first European to visit National City was Gaspar de Portolà in 1769. A mission station called Nuestra Señora de la Concepción became operational in 1821 and it was designated as a Mexican town on December 12 of that year by Governor Manuel Micheltorena. On October 1, 1853, American troops burned down the missions in what is now known as La Guadalupe Day Massacre; however, most of the town's inhabitants managed to flee or hide until January 10th when Mexican forces arrived and burned down both missions again due to public outrage over this event. On July 24, 1859, Captain Don José Romero y Uribe founded Tonquilán Mission with eight friars at what is now known as Nogales Street and Broadway Avenue. California State Route 95 followed an route that crossed through National City from Escondido County into San Diego County before turning eastward towards downtown San Diego and terminating at Interstate 5 near present-day Qualcomm Stadiums south of Downtown San Diego proper. In 1916 National City had a population of only 350 residents when it joined the newly created city of Westminster which had been established adjacent to residential development around Canyon Road/Eddy Boggs Boulevard north of Park Row commercial district west of I-5 and about two miles northeast (northwest) of today's Main Street intersection between Old Town National City Cemetery lots Nos 255 & 256 across from Senior Citizen Center north side on Nogales Street east side next door properties owned by Mrs Jane Addams east side ownership ended up being taken over by developer Rudolph Wirthman who built senior citizen center which still stands today across from where Addams used to live although not facing canyon road

In 1865, President Andrew Johnson issued an executive order that created Calafia Rancho San Antonio Mexican land grant to James Phelan for his studies of Rancho Santa Anita and its potential for irrigation development located east of Bakersfield about 120 miles (193 km) northwest of Los Angeles. Phelan applied for and received the patent on October 2, 1866 from President Johnson withdrawn due to lack of title to the land grant from Mexico In 1870–71, under acts of Congress passed during Reconstruction after the Civil War (1865–1868), American Indians who had been Living off or near public lands were required to provide 640 acres (25 hectares) worth of improvements such as own buildings permanent fences instead of just 10 acres (4 hectares). This included 120 acres (49 hectares) patented to James Phelan which became known as "Calafia Rancho San Antonio". On December 12th 1870 USGS Numbered Plates No 9055 & 95056 were sold at auction at Sotheby's Auctioneers Auction Rooms New YorkCity by Mrs George Sale lot #539861 thru 549959 On January 14th 1871 – Ulysses S Grant delivering remarks before a Joint Session of Congress regarding Indian Affairs announced: "I have directed Mr Attorney General To sue these tribes amicably through all proper channels so that they may be relieved from their present situation" With this order Grant awarded $2 million dollar donation towards extinguishing tribal governments & improving irrigation systems within 1 year—-this would become known as Grants Lands Program
