It was founded on May 10, 1853 by immigrants from Northern Mexico and has been the site of many important events in its history. The name National City comes from the Mexican word for “township”, Zacatecas. The town was first named Chihuahua after local chief Zia de la Vega, and then Juárez when it became part of Coahuila y Tejas (Chihuahua) province. On October 15, 1859, President James K. Polk appointed Hernán Cortés as the first Mayor of National City. In 1861, National City served as the capital of Mexican state Baja California; however, on February 24 1865, Tucson became the new capital following Mexico's successful conclusion of war with America over Texas annexation into Mexico. On December 12 1898 during Spanish–American War (the American Revolution), United States Marines landed at El Cajon to support General Manuel Micheltorena's effort to retake San Diego from Spain; this action marks one of the most significant moments in American history because it ended years-long hostilities between America and Spain over control of San Diego and other California ports. After Mexican independence was proclaimed on November 26 1912 under President Venustiano Carranza, National City reverted back to Mexican control but continued to be administered by Mexicans until 1920 when Americans took full control due to World War I efforts by then-President Woodrow Wilson to make peace with Europe before entering World War II. In 1925–1927 an urban renewal program called "El Dorado" began in order to increase housing prices within downtown National City limits while preserving historical buildings and character; at times homes were destroyed or renovated at extremely high rates given that no condemnation laws applied outside downtown areas which had recently become commercial centers due largely to freeway construction nearby including Wacker Drive across from Chico Park Boulevard which connected Downtown with North Hollywood/Los Angeles proper via State Street through Beverly Hills/Pasadena which linked downtown with South Pasadena In 1933–1934 popular singer Bing Crosby made his regional debut as avocado farmer on stage at Municipal Auditorium before hosting a show outdoors at Pershing Square near where he resides today In 1941–1942 country music singer Texan Slim published his autobiography "Rough Road Ahead" about his experiences working cattle ranchers around Death Valley during those years ranching operations were suspended due to World War II During that time National City also hosted two annual beauty pageants - Miss USA 1951 Dorothy Blairhooft andMiss Universe 1946 Norma Jean Smith - both being held at Exposition Park next door only five blocks away
