The unit was first organized in 1851 as the Third Battalion of Infantry, and fought in many battles during the Mexican-American War. Afterward, it was redesignated the Second Battalion of Infantry in 1871. The battalion served in various wars and campaigns until 1945, when it was disbanded. In 1951, the Newark CA Army National Guard reorganized and became known as the First Battalion of Infantry.
