The first settlers who arrived in what is now NJ were Dutch immigrants who came downriver from New Netherland in 1614/15 Agricultural pioneer Nicholas de Villepin sailed up river on July 29th 1664 landing at Perth Amboy on Long Island Sound .. de Villepin’s party consistedof Thoas Van Cortlandt(1629 – 1685), Hendricus Godoy(1628 – 1702),and Adriaen Block(1634 – 1712). They names may have been inspired by ancient Dutch explorers such as Cornelius Verhulst chartered Explorer Sloop “Zealand” under license from King James II on October 22nd 1609 which passed between Engadine Headlands off Sandy Hook Point near present day Jersey City At first they sustained no damage but soon found that floating logs were being tossed about echeloned along their docklines which created dangerous wakes that interfered with shipping…..In 1662 another group including Pieter Claesz van der Houtt landed near Trenton Ferry Water frontage on Staten Island shoreline but his vessel did not make it ashore due to bad weather conditions inflight….After sailing around Staten Island they landed at what is now Elizabethtown beach…….. Founders Peter Minuit,, Anthony Munday& John Smith came ashore here looking for land where they named this area after Sir George Clinton Governor of Ireland &amp;amp;gt; new England <a href="Newark"; fresh water creek or brook called Hackensack running through today’s North Ward part Pennsylvania Avenue Northeast corner 3rd street Southwark Street……….
