Morrill in order to provide security for the city during the 1904 World's Fair. The Guard first served as a militia unit and drill team before becoming an all-volunteer force on April 1st, 1907. In 1917, the Guard became part of the United States Army and participated in World War I under leadership of Colonel James Fenton. After World War I ended, the National Guard continued its service as a reserve unit until it was disbanded on October 15th, 1920. Officers serve for four years with no possibility of re-enlisting after that time; however, members are able to retire at any time with full benefits if they choose.
