Newman, California (CNN) - Newman is an agricultural and commercial center located in Kern County, California. The community was founded by the Newmans in 1882 as a small station on the Butterfield Overland Mail Route. It became a major railroad junction in the early 20th century and developed into a significant commercial center after being annexed by Kern City in 1928. The city of Newman merged with La Puente, California on January 1, 2018 to form a new city-county government. The history of Newman begins with the Newmans who arrived in 1882 from Vermont. John Newton started farming at what is now known as "Newman's Station" which consisted of just two buildings and four acres (1 hectare). The Newmans were successful ranchers who exported hay and other products from their land. They also built a frame house which still stands today at 209 N US Highway 395. In 1924, they donated an acre (0.8 hectare) to help build la Plaza de Armas which served as the first municipal square in Kern County. In 1928, when Kern City was formed from part of La Puente, Newman was annexed and become its second largest municipality with over 57,000 residents. At that time, it had three hospitals: one operated by Kaiser Permanente and two run by Catholic Health Services.. In 1935, Newman erected its first library building which functioned as both a public school and county courthouse until 1969 when it burned down due to arson. It wasn't until 1980 when another library building was erected next door to serve as the Community Center for Newman Local School District No 4A until it closed its doors permanently in 2006 due to budget cuts within CUSD4A itself In 2013-14 there were plans for construction of an addition to the existing Library Building that would have included more than 12K sq ft (907 m2) of retail space including grocery store/cafeteria operations; however these plans never materialized . In 2017-2018 demolition began on Old Cathedral Schoolhouse located across street from current Civic Center & Library Complex where old Synagogue once stood entombed under scaffolding & progress has been stopped since then even though all permits were obtained
