Newman, California is a small city located in Kern County, California. The population was 11,585 at the 2010 census. Newman is part of the Angels Camp–Norco Metropolitan Statistical Area. Newman was founded on January 3, 1853 by Nicholas Newman and his wife Anna Maria Sgroi. It became a town on December 26 of that year. On May 5, 1860, it became an Agricultural Experiment Station town. It was incorporated as a city on November 17, 1924 by order of Mayor Harry Laughlin with the name of "Angelo". The City motto is "Nova et Ordo" - New Order and Order. In 1951 the name was changed to "Angela". The current name has been used since 1987 when the city annexed part of Big Piney City from that city's mayor Harry Laughlin because Big Piney had not filed for annexation within two years after its incorporation as a village. The citizens of Angela voted to change their name to Newman because they felt it would better represent their community culturally and historically speaking than Big Piney City which itself had been named after two men: George Atherton Big Piney (1859-1939) who fought in the American Civil War and later served as Mayor of Angelina from 1923-29 and Thomas Ewing Nugent (1863-1944), an early advocate for public health in Southern California who also served as County Clerk from 1911-15 before moving up through politics to become Supervisor in 1933 succeeded by Earl Warren Hearst during World War II until his death in 1950 having held office continuously until his death at age 80 years old. Angela’s namesake “Nicholas” first arrived in Northern Baja California on October 12th 1853 aboard ship “Monarch” bound for San Francisco with goods he had brought overland from Sonora Mines Company near modern day Tijuana where gold had been found earlier that year but never exploited commercially due to difficult access roads and lack of water resources making it one of only a few places along Mexico's border where mining could be done profitably without development or environmental impact generally resulting in dust storms every week forcing miners out during days when there wasn't any work available so much so that many people abandoned their homes altogether becoming what today are known as ghost towns or tent cities primarily located around big cities likeihuatanejo (Big Bear) near Ciudad Juárez both were developed following this period some still extant until recently including Huachuca Rancho Negro just southwest de la Paloma Hills between Coyote Valley Road/ US 95 & Ivar Nunez Freeway about 8 miles east off Hwy 395 inside Mexicali Co., currently being redeveloped into an upscale residential area with casino services planned

It experienced significant growth during the California Gold Rush of the 1860s and 1870s, with a population of over 10,000 people in 1885. During World War II, Newman played an important role as a military airfield near Stockton. Today, Newman is known for its agricultural production and its cultural attractions including the Newman Museum of Art and History, which contains items from both America's history and contemporary art.

In the early 1800s, the land that today makes up Newman was part of what is now Kern County. When gold was found in nearby Sierra Nevada foothills in 1848, people from around the area came to try their luck. Some of these men built small towns near mines or worked on ranching operations. Others started businesses like fruit houses or general stores. By 1850, most of this activity had ended because of the Gold Rush and new opportunities for mining were available in other parts of California. In 1853, Captain Newman's son-in-law opened a grocery store in what is now downtown Newman. This store became one of the first places people went to get food when they arrived in town during the Gold Rush period. It also served as a meeting place for local merchants and officials during those years. After 15 years of operation, the business burned down in 1865 while it was being renovated by its owner's son-in-law into a hotel
