Newman was founded in 1887 by John Fenton Newman and his wife, Anna Boleyn Newman. The Newmans are buried in the town's Cemetery. Newman was originally named after Sir Edmund Newton, 1st Baronet of Ely. In 1923, the name of the town was changed to honor Reverend James H. Freeman who had served as pastor at nearby Lathrop Methodist Church since 1922. The townsite currently has no official name but locals often refer to it as "Newman." The first post office in Newman opened on October 15, 1887, and remained open until it closed on December 12, 1913. The last resident to live in the town was Mrs. Florence Kappenheimer who died on January 2nd, 1980. In 1978-79, a new water tower was built in the center of town and became known as "The Star" due to its prominent position within view from almost every house in town. It still stands today and is used for public events such as softball games or concerts during summertime when the adjacent baseball diamond becomes unavailable or too uncomfortable to play on outdoorsdue to heat weather conditions

At age seventeen he immigrated with his brother Michael to North America aboard the ship "SS Anthony" on April 6th, 1879 . They landed at San Francisco on July 1st and soon found themselves working their way up through life as manual laborers or servants until they finally achieved level footing with other Europeans living among us during that era: men like George Hearnshaw (1826-1910), James Jaffray (1838-1912) ... later miners settled throughout our territory...But no one did more for us than John Newell Newell himself - not even our old father could do enough! (Finch 1990) In 1886 John married Sarah Jane Noggle (1857-1939). They would have six children together: Adaeroan (born 1888), Edwin M., Clarence B., Bernadette L., Nora C., and John P.. Adaeroan would marry Andrew White (#1), Edwin M./Clarence B./Bernadette L./Nora C./John P.#2would marry Louise Amalia Dutra (#3) #4married Irene Hadfield (#5) before her death from ovarian cancer at just forty years old on December 12th 1974 . Their daughter Nora C . died suddenly due to leukemia at age eighteen months old on March 26th 1984 surrounded by her loved ones including her mother Adaeroan White & siblings Nora C., Edwin M.(Edwin Peter), Clarence B.(Clarence Bradley), Bernadette L.(Bernadette Loretta), John P.(John Patrick)), & Irene Hadfield(Isabelle Donoghue).
Newman, California was founded on February 20, 1849 by James W. Newman and his wife Lucy. The town was named for John Newman, who donated the land. The first post office in the town was opened on October 25, 1850. In 1860, the townsite was bought by Captain George Stephenson from New Mexico Territory for $3 per acre. In 1865, Captain Stephenson donated a sawmill to the town. The townsite population peaked at 350 in 1870 but declined due to outside influences such as silver mining and railroad construction. By 1880, the townsite had shrunk to just 10 people and by 1890 it had reverted back to its original size of 10 people. In 1906, an express train derailed near Newman while traveling through Central Valley and caused damage that is still seen today including a destroyed Switchback Railroad bridge over the San Joaquin River which links Newman to Fresno County. This event led to increased tourism in the area which helped bring about a rebirth of the townsite population in 1910 with 150 people residing there when it again decreased to 30 people during World War II due to lack of resources (although some continue living there today). In 1960, General Motors began manufacturing their largest car factory in Santa Clara County adjacent to Newman east of Modesto; this contributed significantly to increasing economic growth in the area over time along with new housing developments being built around GM factories throughout Northern California which have continued into present day. The current incarnation of Newman is located within Stanislaus County approximately 26 miles east of downtown Sacramento; however many local businesses remain headquartered here including several law firms and other high-end retailers statewide as well as small manufacturers across various product categories employing many locally sourced products throughout much of rural Stanislaus County; furthermore since January 1st 2019 Newman has been officially designated as part of “Mountain View” becoming one of only a handful cities or counties nationwide considered part-time jurisdiction within San Francisco Bay Area metropolitan statistical area – although this designation does not affect municipal services provided herein remaining fully funded & operational by City Council members solo & collectively
