Newman is known as an agricultural and rural community that has seen significant growth in recent years due to new development in nearby downtown Fresno and elsewhere. Newman's history can be traced back to 1847 when Mormon pioneers arrived in what is now Newman County. After a few years of settlement, the Mormons were forced out of Newman by Mexico after a border war. A ranch belonging to Captain John Sutter became the nucleus for what would become Newman upon his purchase of it from Mexican land owners in 1853. The first post office was established at Newmansville in 1865, and eventually incorporated as a city on July 1, 1907. In 1975, large portions of northern and central California were newly acquired by the United States government as part of Operation Desert Storm during the Iraq War. As a result of this largesse, much farmland was redistributed throughout southern California including parts of northern and central San Joaquin Valley near Dixon City (now Madera), which had been underdeveloped since before World War II due to lack of available water resources. This led to increased production for local farmers and businesses in eastern San Joaquin Valley; however, many residents there felt that their region had not received its fair share from these changes because they were located further away from major produce markets such as Fresno or Bakersfield than their counterparts farther west or south within San Joaquin Valley proper. In response to this issue, some people called for secession from San Joaquin Valley once hostilities ceased rather than live with increasingly scarce resources while others chose to Continuously support larger metropolitan areas despite feeling shortchanged politically within their own communities

It was founded by George Newman in 1887 on land given to him by his father and namesake, George Newman of Norwich, England. The townsite contains the remains of a pioneer adobe cabin which was built by George Newman in 1885. Newman's discovery of gold near Sutter's Fort led to the beginning of what would be known as the Gold Rush of Southern California. Some 12,000 men traveled through Northern California and Nevada searching for nuggets worth an estimated $1 million at the time. In 1848,George Isbell discovered gold at Sutter's Fort which encouraged prospectors to travel upriver from Sacramento into butte country. By 1861 over 25 thousand people had scattered throughout butte country with their tents and wagons dotting the landscape like flies on a dead body. The costliest strike ever recorded occurred when miners struck it rich with two mines yielding $3 million over three years in 1864-1865. This single event led to increased regulation of mining operations and created some very unequal relationships between man and nature that continue to this day (Ferguson). The population of Newman reached 705 by 1870; however it only grew marginally until 1906 when disease became an issue due to crowded living conditions caused by rapid population growth (Wang). After World War II saw more suburban growth across the United States, there was little impact on local demographics until 2000 when Newman experienced its first resident born outside of America (Goodwin). Today, Newman is still a small town located about 20 miles northwest of Sacramento on Interstate 5 with a population density less than one person per square mile (.00017 people/km²). One significant aspect that has changed since 2006 is that although many residents are white Californians who have long since assimilated into American society, there are also numerous minorities including Native Americans (Cameron), Asians (Cheng), African Americans (Kamal) and Latinos (Lopez-Perez) who have made contributions through their work or residence here. Additionally, Newman has become increasingly home-grown as technology continues its exponential growth throughout our society while remaining relatively unaffected by large outflows from Silicon Valley or other major metropolitan areas around the world – something unique among smaller communities like ours where Technology always seems far away but never disappears “It wasn't easy back then trying to learn how things worked because we didn't have much else going for us," said Cheng about her experience growing up hereabouts." Eventually they got electric lights & powered fans so life improved" Many residents today still use traditional methods such as wood burning or solar powerfor heating & cooling emergencies."
