In the early part of the 20th century, Marines were stationed in Newman, California. The Marine Barracks and Chapel were built in 1922 and it was here that Marines bestowed many special gifts to citizens of the town. There are no major rivers or lakes that make up much of the landscape here, instead there are small streams that run through most of the town. Newman was founded in 1887 by John Waddell Newman and his wife Mary Anna Broughton Newman as a station on their journey from Stockton to Atlantic City via Rancho Ferrona. From its beginning, Newman served as an agricultural center for cattle raisers and other farmers who used its roads and trails for transportation. In 1933, when Newmans merged with nearby townships forms what is now Kern River Township (later named after him), it became one of 17 communities formed within Kern River Township which were designated as “Community Development Areas” (CDA). These areas were established to promote economic development within their boundaries while also providing services such as fire protection, public health care, libraries/theaters/theater districts etc., thereby creating shared resources among these community members which contributed toward developing more efficient economies overall. Today’s economy revolves around agriculture but new businesses have started popping up all over town including a few technology startups!

By 1870, the population had grown to over 1,500 residents. In 1876, Newman became the first incorporated community in Alameda County. At the time, Alameda County was part of California’s Rancho San Pablo system of land grant settlements dating back to 1795. Newman grew rapidly during the early 20th century due to its location on the eastern edge of Alameda County and its status as a center for industry and commerce. The town developed into an important transportation hub thanks to its strategic location between BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) and Oakland Airport. In 1923, Newman came under control of California Pacific Railroad and experienced rapid growth until it merged with Northern Pacific Railway in 1948. In recent decades, Newman has seen significant revitalization efforts spearheaded by its city government and businesses including new housing developments, a shopping mall,and two professional sports teams – the Earthquakes (a National Football League team)and the Warriors (a professional basketball team). Despite these improvements, some lingering issues remain such as high crime rates and lack of public education opportunities in the area.
