Newman, California is a small town located in El Dorado County, California. It was founded by Hernando Newman in 1848. The town was named after him and his wife Emma. Newman mined gold in the area until 1861 when he closed his mine. He then built a sawmill and store in the town. In 1872, he sold the mill to A.T. Grove and Company who continued to use it until it burned down in 1924. The store burned down also but not before it stored many historical artifacts from Newman such as plans for a new sawmill and tools used by miners during their work halls. After the store's destruction, many of the artifacts were redistributed among various museums around the United States before they were finally given back to Hernando Newman himself at an auction held in 1931. Hernando Newmans life spanned a variety of different aspects including farming, mining and business ventures throughout his life which left behind a lasting legacy on Newman Valley today where many businesses still operate thanks to his hard work and dedication over time!
