The National Guard in Newman, California has a rich history. The first unit to be activated in the city was the 1st Battalion, 10th Infantry Regiment on December 6, 1903. The regiment was originally organized as part of the 9th California Infantry and fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1912, the battalion became part of the 20th Infantry Division which served in World War I. After the war, the battalion was redesignated as Company A, 1st Battalion, 10th Infantry Regiment and served in Korea before being mobilized for Operation Desert Storm in 1991. Today, Newman’s National Guard is commanded by Colonel Tom Bogan who also serves as acting commandant of San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and Commander of Imperial Valley Sheriff’s Department. Newman’s National Guard has had a number of distinguished alumni including Medal of Honor recipient General James “ Crazy Horse” Kipling (1865-1946), Retired Lieutenant Colonel Earl Swenson (1923-2005), Major General John Kappler (1898-1978), Retired Colonel Donny Hathaway (1927-2007) and retired Sergeant Major Samuel J. Moreno (1920-2015). Additionally, many local businesses have commissioned members from Newman’s National Guard to serve as officers or employees over time including United States Air Force Academy cadet pilot Captain Timothy Whitehead (2001-present), San Bernardino County Supervisor Scott Wiener (2002-present), Mayor Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg (2003–present) and current Newman City Councilmember Adam Jarchowich(2011–present).

In 1907, Newman's first high school was founded; it closed in 1966 and now serves as a museum. This development has included several residential communities including Atwater Village (now known as Northridge), Mercury Hills, Villa del Rey/Windsor Hills and Sunrise Valley/Dormer Heights/Alpine Lakeside Villages with more than 2,000 homes completed or under construction since 2009. The townsite of Adobe Walls was acquired by the city of Fresno in 1965 from rancher Jens Sørensen for $25 per acre ($ today). When San Joaquin Valley farmers decided to abandon their irrigated agriculture following World War II and build housing instead, Adobe Walls became an all-purpose commercial center that attracted people from throughout Northern California who traded goods brought downriver such as grapes and nuts from Rancher Jerry's winery at milepost 71 on Ute Creek Road. Today Adobe Walls hosts one elementary school (grades K-4) with about 100 students, two parks (Adobe Walls Municipal Golf Course & Adobe Walls Community Pool), three businesses: Jens' Hardware store which opened in 1965 after Schumacher installed a new flooring store there; DellComputer Corporation which opened 1984; and First American Bank which opened 1990 serving both residents until 2001 when it merged with HSBC Bank USA Inc., then Nationwide Financial Corporation before becoming Wells Fargo retail bank beginning Nov 01 2006.) In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln authorized the armament and organization of a national guard division specifically for military purposes. The first unit was constituted on July 1st, 1861. From its inception until 1865, there were only male volunteers enlisted in the National Guard; however, this changed with the passage ofthe Morrill Act in 1862 whichauthorized female enrollment in units regardless of gender. This change ledto an increase in enlistments and eventually became one of America’s most popular military services.
Newman was founded by George Newman in 1859 as a small salt mine on the Trinity River. In 1865, the town became a post office and in 1868, it became an incorporated village. The population of Newman reached 1,500 in 1910 and grew to 4,000 by 1930. By 1940, the city had become the largest in California with a population of over 10,000. It experienced significant economic growth during World War II with production of munitions and other war materials helping to support the city’s economy. However, following the warthe city’s fortunes began to decline as manufacturing stopped contributing significantly to its economy. Newmans fortunes ultimately changed when oil exploration began operations nearby and this led to new development including an increased number of businesses and jobs in Newman. Today, Newman is one of the most vibrant cities within California with a thriving community spirit that continues to drive its economy.
Newman, California was founded on October 14, 1846 by a group of Mormon pioneers. The town was named for Brigham Young, the founder of the Mormons. The town served as a military post during the Indian Wars and also became a center for citrus production. In 1907, Newman annexed part of Carlsbad and in 1912 it became an incorporated city.
