In the early 1800s, Newman was a small town in Northern California. It was known for its horses and cowboys, and their annual rodeo event. Soon, the town's police department became one of the most powerful in Northern California. The department's officers were known for their skills in tracking down criminals, apprehending fugitives, and dealing with crowds. The first Newman Police Department was established in 1868. The department's officers were recruited from among the local population. At that time, it was unusual for a city to establish a police force. In addition to its law-enforcement abilities, the Newman Police Department helped to develop social services in the town. By 1903, the Newman Police Department had grown so large that it absorbed two other departments within its borders: The East Palo Alto Police Department and The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office. These additions made the Newman Police Department one of the largest law enforcement organizations in California at that time. Throughout its history, the Newman Police Department used a variety of methods to promote public safety including education programs, community outreach programs, and SWAT operations (when needed). In recent years, however, policing has been focused more on counterterrorism efforts than traditional crime prevention measures. This shift has led to some criticism of how well-funded and well-equipped the Newton PD is compared to other departments across Northern California."

Newman, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 26,514 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in San Bernardino County and the tenth-most populous municipality in Los Angeles County. Newman City straddles both Riverside and San Bernardino counties and includes portions of both cities. The oldest settlement in what is now Newman were two tents built by pioneers on October 11, 1848 near present-day Kresge Road and Deer Valley Drive. It was a small post serving as a stop on stagecoach routes between Los Angeles and Pasadena. In 1850, when North Carolina landed on Southern California following the Mexican–American War, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered his troops to occupy this area including parts of today's Riverside County. After Mexican independence was granted to America on December 1, 1821 – days after Santa Ana had surrendered – Californios began moving into this area from Nuevo Rancho claims east of today's town center. By 1860 most of what is now Newman had been developed as part of the large rancho grants issued to various land owners along Rodeo Road subsequent to the Gold Rush period. A small community called "El Cajon" grew up around one such grant north of present day Riverside Boulevard west of El Monte Avenue about 1840s or 1850s due to (1) an influx of Anglo miners during that era and (2) easy access to water supplies across mountain ranges via canals dug through hillsides by early settlers. In 1863–64 Ansel Adams photographing Yosemite National Park used lands just east of present-day Riverside for his first exposures; he would not visit Yosemite until 1870 while working in nearby Sonoma County as an assistant photographer with Ulysses S. Grant’s secretary at home under President Abraham Lincoln’s administration After years spent mining gold near Carson City (now Pershing Heights), Yosef Chaim Weizmann became head rabbi for Los Angeles Congregation Beit Shemesh in 1888 after traveling throughout Western America preaching Reform Judaism which he brought back with him from his trips to New York City; Weizmann dedicated his synagogue building at 9th Street & Union Avenue northwest of downtown Los Angeles during ceremonies on November 15 (the first synagogue dedication outside New York since 1792). Newman, California is located in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. The city was founded on February 14, 1849 by John Newman and his wife Lucretia. The original site for the town was a parcel of land that lay between Contra Costa County to the south and Alameda County to the north. It is now a census-designated place (CDP) with a population of 149,665 as of 2010. John Newman had been born in 1796 in Norwich, England to parents who were Methodists. He immigrated to North America in 1825 and arrived in San Francisco Bay Area on July 26th, 1827 aboard the brig "Queen" with his family. The Newmans lived first on Mission Street before moving to what is now First Street near Bush Avenue. In 1830 they moved again, this time to Telegraph Hill where they established themselves as prosperous merchants and began developing their land holdings which included much of today's Newman city center including parts of Powell Boulevard and Townsend Road. In 1850 John Newman married Mathilda Marchbanks (1812-1886). They had two children: John Fenton Newman (1851-1926) who became an Officer in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and Lauri Auerbach Newman (1902-1978), also an officer in the USMC during World War II. Lauri Auerbach Newman served as Mayor of San Francisco from 1951 until her death in 1978; she was also involved with many civic organizations including being one of the co-founders of City College Of San Francisco; her husband served as its first chancellor from 1969 until his retirement in 2006. Newman was founded in 1851 by John Newman and his wife, Elizabeth. The village was named for New Englander Nathaniel Newman, who had donated land to the community. In 1873, the town annexation replaced one of its original townsites with a new village which became known as Newman. In 1916, the name was changed to Northridge and then finally to North Hollywood. The population of North Hollywood peaked at over 100,000 in 1950 but declined rapidly through the 1960s and 1970s due to migration from Los Angeles County and other nearby cities. However, since 2000 it has begun to grow again thanks to a wave of new development along Grand Avenue near Warner Bros. Studios.
