The Newport Beach Army Reserve detachment has a rich history dating back to the early days of American military involvement in World War II. The detachment was activated in 1941 and has played an important role in both the local community and the country at large, serving as an essential part of the military and civilian communities in which it resides. The detachment’s roots can be traced back to 1917 when the Newport Beach Volunteer Fire Department was organized. The volunteer fire department quickly became a vital part of Newport Beach’s infrastructure and operated out of various locations until 1945, when it relocated to its current location on Donner Street. During World War II, the Newport Beach detachment served as one of America’s first combat units and played a critical role throughout the war. From 1942 through 1945, they participated in campaigns such as Inchon (1944), Okinawa (1945), Guam (1945), Iwo Jima (1946), Saipan (1946), and Tinian (1946). In total, they deployed 5 times during World War II- most notably for Operation very strong armada- making them one of only two detachments from Orange County that deployed directly into battle. After World War II ended, many members of the Newport Beach detachment decided to retire or move away from service due to changing technology, economy, or other factors. However, a few brave men remained on board until 1954 when all soldiers were discharged from active duty following Operation wreath-plantation. The unit continued operate under state control until 1969 when it transferred back into federal hands under Title 10 jurisdiction. In 1846, the United States acquired California from Mexico through the Mexican-American War and soon began constructing military installations in what is now Newport Beach. The first Americans to live permanently in Newport Beach were John Hudnut and his family, who arrived in 1847. They are also credited with being the first residents to build a house on present-day Huntington Ave. In 1850, Captain George Morrison sailed his ship "Alacrity" into harbor and landed 50 soldiers at Point Santa Ana to establish summer encampment on current day Harbor Drive while he prepared for war with Mexico. In 1861, during America's Civil War (the American Civil War), troops under General Robert E. Lee spent three weeks at Point Santa Ana before moving inland to Fort Mather on Mount Wilson where they rested for two days before continuing their march down Pale View Road past today's Donnybrook Park towards Irvine Ranch
