The Newport Beach Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to World War II. The unit was founded in 1942 when the city of Newport Beach activated its first military unit, the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines. In 1944, the battalion was redesignated as the 3rd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment and served in Okinawa before being transferred to San Diego for duty in the Pacific Theater of Operations. In 1946, 3rd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment was re-designated as the 2nd Battalion (Los Angeles County), 17th Infantry Regiment and fought on Leyte Gulf during World War II. After hostilities ended in 1945, 2nd Battalion (LA County) served as an occupation battalion until it disbanded in 1952. The battalion's equipment was sold to various other units throughout California until it finally arrived at Newport Beach in 1942. 2nd Battalion (LA County) served as part of numerous garrison battalions throughout California until it finally arrived at Newport Beach in 1942 where it became part of the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team under command of Lieutenant Colonel John T. Healy Jr.. The brigade deployed to defend against a possible Japanese attack on Long Beach and soon afterwards found itself fighting at Iwo Jima during World War II. After Iwo Jima campaign, 2/9 HBCT redeployed to Okinawa where they were responsible for operations around Naha Airfield from June 1945 - August 1945 As part of 701st Infantry Division they also fought offpx Sasebo Naval Base In March 1946; their final combat action came two months later when they were ordered into active duty with United States Forces Korea (USFK) after North Korea attacked South Korea causing all US forces stationed thereheimerge gasoline shortages which ultimately led to their activation on 15 May 1951 At that time they had become known as Task Force 95H Task Force 95H participated in Operation Junction City which saw North Korean Regiments attacking South Koreans positions along Route 11 near Pusan Perimeter; resulting 12 Unexploded ordnance injuries and one dead enemy soldier Oakley’s Unit killed 6 Vehicle destroyers sunk 8 Tunnels dug by guerrillas KFOR destroyed 10 bridges over Yalu River

In 1946–47 alone there were 1,000 U.S. Army soldiers stationed in Orange County--the most any county in California had ever seen! As part of military government control over Orange County post–World War II there were many changes including the disbanding of all military detachments within Los Angeles County as well as reductions in troop strength throughout California until only a few hundred troops remained by 1992 when hostilities ended against Iraq mandate No.(Charter 362)). This left many servicemen unaccounted for who may have gone off to other wars or may have been discharged because they no longer met enlistment standards set by local government authorities or because their units had disbanded elsewhere since World War II?
