The Newport Beach Coast Guard Museum is a museum in Newport Beach, California that preserves the history of the Newport Beach Coast Guard. It was founded in 1951 as the Citizens' Services Branch of the then-new Harbor Defense Commission and has since grown into one of Southern California's most important public institutions. The Museum's collection includes items from both American and British coast guard histories. As a result, the Museum can trace its roots back to 1881, when members of the South San Diego Company of Marines founded what would become the Newport Beach Coast Guard Department. Today, there are over 120 members of the coast guard detachment in Newport Beach and neighboring La Jolla. The Department also maintains a full-time reserve component which provides security for local businesses and critical infrastructure. In addition to performing law enforcement duties on land and at sea, the coast guard detachment participates in various humanitarian aid missions throughout Orange County and Southern California. One of particular significance to Newport Beach residents is that since 1941, all first responders have been volunteer firefighters from nearby Laguna Niguel Fire District No. 2 (now Laguna Hills). The donated fire trucks remain operational today as part ofthe Coast Guard’s emergency response system. This unique relationship began with an act by then-Mayor Harry Seibert – who saw first hand how volunteers could quickly respond to emergencies on his city streets In recent years, donations from corporate partners have helped support special events such as Fourth Of July fireworks displays or racing events at Laguna Seca Racetrack; but no matter what type of event takes place, it is always dedicated to keeping our community safe

Newport Beach is a small town in Orange County, California. The population was 54,814 at the 2010 census. It is located on the south bank of the Pacific Ocean between Laguna Beach and Dana Point. Newport Beach began as two small pueblos: Santa Ana and Half Moon Bay. In 1879, the U.S. Army built Fort Godwin on point now known as Newport Pier to protect San Diego from Mexican attacks during the Tejas War. The fort was abandoned in 1881 and used for storage until it was sold to Captain John J. Stevens in 1905 for $5,000 (). Newport's first post office opened in 1907. The city of Newport Beach was incorporated on July 1, 1912, by vote of its citizens (63% against). On November 5, 1916, World War I veteran Colonel James Halsey donated land at behind Half Moon Bay Boulevard and Third Street to become what is now called Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton () after his home state of New Mexico had been invaded by Germany (). After World War II ended with American victory over Japan (), Naval Station Newport became available () to include Marines stationed there (); Camp Pendleton closed in 1946 but reopened as Marine Corps Air Station Miramar () in 1951 (). In 1959-1960 an airport project led by then City Manager Raymond Fenton were designed to improve Terminal 2 for use as a commercial airport; however this plan never materialized because of budget cuts within City Hall (). In 1966-1967 plans were made to build a new port that would be adjacent to Terminal 2; this project never materialized either because of budgetary problems or opposition from local business owners who saw no benefit to their properties within sight of the new port construction site (). Finally in 1984-1985 plans were made for a development called Harbor Drive that would have involved building a marina and several thousand square feet of retail space along Harbor Drive SE which never happened either because money ran out or opponents fought hard against it (). However if one looks back over all these projects there are many more examples where money couldn't be found or people refused to give up their homes/land for something that wasn't really going to help them much beyond just providing some extra parking lot space or economic development opportunities . Overall it seems like when things go wrong usually somebody has somethingto say about it . Even though Newport Beach doesn't always get what they want from government planners or developers it still manages to produce some beautiful architecture and wonderful places for people living near the ocean - whether that's downtown with its old warehouses converted into loft apartments or Seal beach with its private jetty making it easy access both para-sailing activities (or just taking a walk onshore)
