Newport Beach was a small town in Orange County, California, United States until the early 21st century. Prior to its incorporation as a city in 1907, it was an unincorporated community of 100 residents. The first people who lived here were the Ohlone tribe who hunted and fished in the nearby coastal waters for food. The first Europeans to arrive were American soldiers during World War II who established Camp Pendleton on Signal Hill. The town site was chosen because of its strategic location between two Navy base camps and on the route of military supply lines connecting Asia with America. Southern Pacific Railway brought settlers here from San Francisco in 1887 and built a railroad station at what is now Main Street. A post office called Newport Beach opened in 1886, and remained open until it closed in 1893 due to lack of mail service. In 1907, Newport Beach incorporated as a city under the name "Newport". The population increased rapidly after World War I when new mills opened up around town; seafood became one of the city's main industries. The war also generated some new residents: many servicemen returned home after serving in Europe and Asia; others came from nearby Laguna Niguel to take advantage of good job opportunities at local companies such as Kaiser Aluminum Company and General Motors Corporation. Many veterans settled down into traditional occupations such as ranching or fishing but also took up professional careers such as architecture or law enforcement; this group is known collectively as "the New Breed." In 1984, Disneyland opened its park adjacent to Newport Beach Boulevard (now Paradise Pier), making it easier for people living near Disneyland to come see it while they still had access to Interstate 5 which connected them with Los Angeles County without having to travel far away. As more people moving out into suburbs started bringing their children along for visits (which began becoming popularized by bumper-to-bumper traffic jams on I-5), businesses within walking distance of Disneyland began closing down due to competition from stores closer by that offered greater variety of products and services. However, despite efforts by Mayor Donny Carradine (then running for state Senate) and City Councilman Rick Meehan (who unsuccessfully campaigned against Carradine) over the years, no major development ever occurred within walking distance of Disneyland – until recently! In response, Mayor Carradine has started working together with Downtown Disney Developers Association member Jeffrey Lohse starting plans for what will become known as "Downtown Disney 2."Lohse said that his goal is not simply another shopping mall but rather something that would be anchored by cultural attractions like an art museum or theater complex similar to those found at Anaheim's Hollywood Park Entertainment District - both areas which have seen significant redevelopment recently thanks largely to Central Coast Living's funding streamlining plan which helped bring high-end restaurants like Nobu Matsuhisa back into business along with other anchor tenant changes including Target added onto lower level parking garage spaces currently used by Pizza Hut). He expects Downtown Disney 2 will open sometime next year - likely before Christmas!

In 1923, it became part of the City of Newport Beach. The Coast Guard Station at Newport served as a point of departure for Coast Guard personnel and supplies during World War II. A Navy air station operated from Newport from 1941 to 1945. From 1959 to 1963, the city developed Naval Air Station Miramar which hosted Lockheed P-3C Orion aircraft. In 1984, NAS Miramar was transferred to the Department of Defense and is now known as US Navy East Bay Naval Base. In 1996, after years of planning and investment by Mayor Jerry Brown and City Councilmember Tom Bates, Newport Beach designated itself an International Arts District with support from UNESCO's Creative Cities program. That year saw the opening of world famous La Jolla Museum of Art; San Diego State University's School of Fine Arts; and Point Loma Nazarene University's School of Education & Humanities."
