Some of the most famous military donations include the USS American Battle Cruiser (BB-38) and USS Princeton (CV-26). The BB-38 was donated by business owner Elmer F. Smith in 1938 and was used as a training ship for the US Coast Guard until it was decommissioned in 1969. The CV-26 was donation by businessman John W. Welch in 1951 and served as an escort carrier until it collided with another vessel off the coast of California in 1978. It is now on display at the Naval History Museum in Washington D.C.. The Newport Beach community has also contributed to local military efforts through both monetary donations and volunteerism. For example, many residents donated land for Fort Mason Park which is now home to the Marine Corps Reserve Battalion 1 Station - Newport Beach detachment #2. Additionally, many people volunteered their time during World War II with organizations such as Operation Crossroads or Victory Over Japan Memorial Service Committee which collected war supplies and distributed them directly to troops stationed overseas. Many residents continue to give back by donating items such as furniture, appliances, ornaments, or even pets to local charities during special events throughout year called " giving Back Day."
