The Newport Beach, California National Guard has been a part of the United States Armed Forces since its inception in 1947. The Guard is made up of soldiers and civilians who are each called to serve their country through military service, training and display of patriotism. Since its inception, the Guard has donated items and services to various charities throughout Southern California. In 1978, the National Guard Foundation was established in order to perpetuate this tradition by awarding grants to organizations that assist military veterans and their families. This year marks the centennial anniversary of the founding of the National Guard Foundation and it is important for us to reflect on all that has happened in these past 100 years. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed legislation providing for an independent civilian arm of the U.S. armed forces known as the National Guard Bureau (NGB). The NGB was charged with administering all federal resources assigned to state militias under Title 10 USC §664 et seq., including donations from private individuals and businesses. As part of this new organization, donations were accepted from both local communities and national defense agencies across America. This year we celebrate our century-old history by honoring those who have made such a difference in our community. The Newport Beach National Guard was organized on December 12, 1941 and placed into existance on February 6, 1942. The first unit was the 1st Battalion, 10th Marines. The battalion served with honor until February 1945 when it left for Guam to help fight in the Pacific War. In 1946 the battalion was reorganized as the 9th Marines and served in California until 1957 when they were sent back to Guam to serve in the military police program during the Korean War. After that they served as a unit of the Regular Army Reserve before being disbanded in 1971. The battalion is currently inactive but has been kept active by donation from individuals and businesses across Orange County
