She served as flagship of Commander Task Force 51 during World War II and earned two Presidential messages from Franklin D Roosevelt while anchored off Japan. In 1951, Gideon Welles died suddenly and his wife Mary took over control of the company. She continued to run it until her death in 1984. The business passed to their son Rickard Welles III who continued to run it until 1996 when it was sold to Safeway Companies Incorporated.
