Norco, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is located about east of Bakersfield on State Route 99 and south of Visalia on State Route 62. Norco is one of the few remaining old-time mining towns in Kern County. The Norco Mine closed in 1924 but the town continued to be populated until it merged with nearbyVisalia in 1963. Today, Norco consists mostly of residences and a small shopping center. The Noroco Post Office (1924) still stands - it was destroyed by fire in 2002, but has been rebuilt and reopened as a museum since then. Noroco began as an agricultural community that grew up around the Noroco Rancho Adobe cattle pastures that ran along the banks of the Kern River. In 1887, John Norris built a cabin near where present-day Norco sits on state route 99 about east of Bakersfield for his wife Lillie Norris and their twelve children; eight were born there and six moved to Visalia when they were five years old. There are several Norwegian-American families who remain active today in what has become known as "The Norwegian Village."

Norco is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kern County. The first Europeans to explore and settle what is now Kern County were Spanish traders and missionaries who arrived in 1769–1770. A Rancho Norco was granted by Guadalupe Hidalgo on November 12, 1837 to José Joaquin Mora y Soto, one of the important early Mexican settlers in California. This rancho included what is now Norco Creek east of town and part of the current community of Atwater Village west of town. In 1843, John Cranch sold his holdings in Rancho Norco to George Hearst for $10 per acre (1/2 share). From this time forward, most development within today's boundaries took place outside the limits of present-day Norco City Limits until after World War II when large scale ranching operations began within a few miles of downtown (and later beyond) parcels that became necessary as result of continued agricultural production within close vicinity during that period. In 1911 Elihu Root defeated incumbent mayor James Fenton in the mayoral election with 54% of the vote over challenger Arthur Waddell’s 46%. One year later, he won re-election with 56% against challenger J. Wilbur Laughlin’s 44%.Root served two terms as Mayor before his death on October 15, 1916 at age 80 years old from a heart attack while holidaying at his ranch near Bakersfield; he had been mayor for only three months out of office due to term limit laws then existing in California at that time. root's successor was Democrat Harry Bridges who served until January 1, 1920 when he lost re-election to Hiram Johnson. Main Street between 8th St./Atwater Ave., north side from 7th St./Lodi Ave., south side from 4th Ave./Fremont Blvd., east side from 3rd Ave./Atwater Village are still named for him including Elihu Root Place and Harry Bridges Way
Norco was founded by Nicholas Norco in 1860. The town originally consisted of only a few buildings. By 1870, the population had grown to over 100 people and the town began to develop its own infrastructure, including a post office, school, and warehouse. In 1881, the town became an incorporated village. In 1912, Norco became a city when it annexed parts of neighboring Rancho Cucamonga.
