Norco, California is a small town located in Stanislaus County, California. The population was 3,463 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Modesto, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Norco post office has been in operation since 1879. The site of Norco was first occupied by the Ohlone people in the late 1700s and early 1800s. In 1859, John Steuart built a cabin here on land he had purchased from Mission San Francisco de Asís for $2 per acre (1/4 share of 6 square miles). In 1862, following his purchase of additional land from the Mexican government, Steuart founded Rancho Norco with Wm. Hildebrandt as its first owner and manager. The rancho extended from what is now downtown Norco to Brennan Road east and south (now Upland Road), extending into today's eastern Kern County; it was bounded by present day Bakersfield to the north, Paramount to the south and Fresno County to the west. Norco quickly became an important center for agriculture due to its fertile soil and good water resources. Wheat production began operations on rancho hands’ holdings in 1865 and continued through World War I; during that time there were over 1 million acres planted with wheat in Stanislaus County alone! A store opened in 1870 called "The Grapes" which closed about 1915 when prohibition made wine more expensive than grain liquor which then became more accessible than beer or whiskey across America so stores like "The Grapes" closed down." Rancho Norco was sold off beginning in 1923 until it reverted back to Mission San Francisco de Asís ownership in 1949; upon this return it renamed itself "Mission San Francisco de Asís Rancho Norco". Some of these families who ran Ranches include: Leland Stanford Sr., Jr., Edwin Epps Jr., daughter Mary Jane Stanford (married to Allen Stanford), Carlos Menem (husband of Miriam Menem) Juanita Borgnia (wife of Jorge Borgnia) among many others." Noroco also played an important role during World War II as it served as both a bomber base for American forces stationed here and as a storage depot for ammunition supplies brought overland from Northern CaliforniaQueueing up with other communities throughout Southern California such as Del Norte, Tuolumne Meadows-Anacapa Island-Channel Islands National Park before being delivered right up against Japan's coastline where they were unloaded onto small boats manned by Japanese soldiers who then took them directly out into open ocean where they died!"
