Norco, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 1,758 at the 2010 census. It is located in Kern County. The Norco Mining and Manufacturing Company was founded in 1859 by John Norris as a small-scale gold and silver mine for his brother-in-law, Charles Wernher. The company operated a millinery and dressmaking business before becoming an Anglo American copper mine in 1879. In 1907, Norris donated 2,000 acres (800 hectares) of land to the town for its incorporation as a townsquare on November 3 that same year. In 1957, Norco lost $1 million in its copper mine disaster which killed over 300 miners and injured more than 1,500 others. The town rebuilt quickly with help from the U.S Department of Defense Civil Works Administration (CWA), US Air Force Reserve Forces, local businesses and citizens through donations of money and goods.
